Don't mention that on here. It always ends the same, 117 bloody wheelmen and no robbers.

Bizzare logic. Could Porsches maybe be everywhere now because their appeal has never been greater ?

I really cannot fathom why someone would place 'exclusivity' as some kind of criteria when buying a car. Unless you're an attention seeking whore, why would you care ? I would actually go further and say exclusivity is a bad thing. Not only will you attract more unwanted (in my case) attention in your super exclusive car but greater supply = more used car bargains to be had. The prospect of an affordable new shape Cayman S 3 years from now has me salivating. The prospect of an ultra rare exclusive head turning Cayman S 3 years from now makes me want to go and lie down and knock out big ZZZZZ's.

The internet seems to be awash with people calling into question certain car manufacturers business models (I blame Evo magazine for this) but the bottom line is that car companies are first and foremost businesses who exist to generate profit for the shareholders of that business. If that means building diesel SUV's and selling them by the lorryload at the expense of your next sports car having slightly diminished bragging rights in the golf club car park or on the Pistonheads forum then so be it I guess.

So what do these people drive then ? 3 wheeler Morgan's ? Gumpert Apollo's ? Most people I know with that kind of juvenile mindset drive a white Audi, which is a delicious irony if you think about it.

Most friends of mine (and myself included) buy a car because of what it does for them eg handling, performance, practicality, styling, refinement and such like. And if they can afford to buy and run it. None of them play golf.

There is a cross over point where must have becomes every one has and familiarity breeds contempt. The trick is to stay on the right side of must have and you can only do that by keeping an element of exclusivity or by keeping the product fresh and upgraded so people trade up.
Porsche achieve it to an extent by going into new markets -4x4 & 4 door.
I have to agree with Kenny though most people want to have exclusively - but only if it's for a desirable product, if you have one and no one else wants one it just makes you oddball, if you have one and so does everyone else it makes you a sheep.

It was a subtle (OK - far too subtle) nod towards a bit of advertising Lotus did just prior to the launch of the Evora.

So when you drive around in your Vauxhall Astra, you consider yourself to be a sheep and I should consider you to be an oddball ?

This thread is giving me a fascinating insight into the mindset of those who buy their cars to first and foremost try and impress others.
