What to replace the Rangerover sport with?
Re: What to replace the Rangerover sport with?
We have a V6 Cayenne with air suspension etc. It's not everyones cup of tea but we really like it. 3 kids, Golden Retriever and luggage isn't a problem. Stong residuals, nice place to sit and 40mpg is easily achievable (we average about 38mpg per tank). Happy to let you have a nosey at ours in Stoney if it's of any interest.
Re: What to replace the Rangerover sport with?
I am a huge Porschephile but I have 2 problems with the KN.
Firstly, you are paying Porsche tax on parts and maintenance to drive a diesel SUV.
And secondly, it is one of the ugliest cars currently on sale.
No mention of any kind of budget but how about a Touareg R line ? The thinking mans KN. Some great lease deals out there on them.
Or the new RRS ? I have driven one and it is sublime. The only thing it has in common with the old car is the name.
I also ran a XC90 for 4 years and it was absolutely brilliant. As a value for money proposition there's no better 4x4 out there in my opinion.

Jeremy

OK I think we need to clarify the budget. Looking at essentially down sizing for a car that we can pile miles onto. Max budget would be £45k it needs to have manufacturer supported warranty, preferably with a service plan. 40+ mpg min on urban. Doesn't need to be, and indeed don't really want another 4x4. More estate/sports back/hatch back orientated is what we are looking for. In fact more likely to buy something golf/A3 sized and get a cheap tow car from the mart. It has to be a descent drive, comfortable and economical first.
If I was after another 4x4 it would be the new RR which is by far the best all round car I have ever owned. Would love a new one but with the house move it's just too much money right now.

How about a 4 series Grand Coupe? They look awesome in the flesh, coupe looks with 4 doors.
430d with some nice options would be bang on budget at list price. I know dealers will discount 3-series by 10-15% without too much persuasion so with a bit of haggling you might get a 435d for your budget.
Estoril blue with Oyster leather please and I'll have it off you in 5 years time!

My old man asked half a dozen BMW dealers for their one-shot best price for his spec of 330d, and the best price gets the order. 15% off list, order placed, and the others were still calling back trying to beat it!

Looks like I will be punting the RRS rather than trading it so this now opens up more options as I no longer need to buy above the RRS trade in value. Still be a new car though as I need the security of knowing that HWMBO will never be stuck while I am away.
Only problem now is too much choice.

Not sure of the price and not a hatch back but... A car i think has great proportions and looks smaller than it actually is as a result is the latest 5 series, a very handsome car in my view!

Actually not a kick in the arse off budget?? 535d

That said, its not the ugliest car BMW make (has anyone seen the 2 series boke mobile?), actually quite pretty but its just WRONG and... they have made a 2 door 3 series under the name of a 4 series and now they are making a 4 door version of the 2 door car that is replacing the 4 door car that was a 2 door in the 1st place.
Mike - I agree with Sanjoy on this one for sure.
Re: What to replace the Rangerover sport with?
Always liked the looks of the F10 5 series too, especially after the horrible Bangleised E60. The interior ambiance is a step up from the 3 series, but I suspect the latter would be a more engaging drive - with a 45k budget I can't think of much to touch a 335d touring.mwmackenzie wrote:Not sure of the price and not a hatch back but... Re: What to replace the Rangerover sport with?
Have to chuckle at some of the recommendations given your criteria is downsize, more economical, car like and your still getting Cayenne's etc thrown into the mix
A bit biased here but I have a 63 plate 330d M Sport X Drive Tourer, Estoril Blue with aftermarket ACS springs and it's the 2nd best car I have ever owned (nothing will ever beat my E reg 205 Gti 1.9
).
0-60 in 5.4secs, 40+mpg, 8 sp auto and plenty of creature comforts and load lugging ability.
Go for an ex BMW Management car, circa 6month old with 6k miles, save £10k + on new and get the 5 year service pack.
End of this thread, I thank you......

Is the X drive worth the sacrifice in mpg over the 2 wheel drive car, I mean do you notice a difference having it, does it actually help when the going gets slippy.

Has a pretty nice rear end too...

Probably not a drivers drean but for what you want maybe?

Have a quick read/view of this:
http://blog.elmsdirect.com/bmw-xdrive-vs-audi-quattro/
I don't notice a massive MPG difference in having it but then again I was coming from the Clio 200RS (prior Evo VIII FQ-330) so my mpg expectations are probably a lot lower than the norm. Driven the same I don't think you will get a massive difference in mpg due to the way the BMW system works - not likes its permanently 50/50.
I have certainly noticed it transferring the power when the conditions have been slippy and its always nice to have a bit more of a safety net. However in reality with being in Aberdeen the X-Drive makes a lot more sense (with winters on as well) as at least you won't be stuck. I think talking to John Clark's last year the majority of their Aberdeen buyers now go for X-Drive.
