Back to work
Sounds like a good one! What size of boat/yacht/ship?

[quote="Titanium S1 111S (gla)"]I’ve done my share of camping too and on the two or three nights in a lifetime when the weather is good and the midges are tolerable there is absolutely nothing to beat it. The rest of the time it’s pretty grim and I’m with Dominic, Greg etc.

Which is why my real passion is sailing, can you imagine a more pointless activity. Going nowhere – slowly – at truly massive expense – to sleep in a boat which is only marginally better than camping.

Ah I hear you say, it is really about a natter with your pals and a few drinks. One word “Pub!â€

46 feet, big enough to be moderately comfortable but small enough to be a real sailing experience.

Graham that sounds awesome. I was happy with my planned summer sailing trip from Oban to St Kilda and back over two weeks but what an adventure you have there. You should post some photos up from that trip
Oban to St Kilda should be good. I’ve been sailing on the West coast all my life and there is really nowhere to beat it if you get the right weather. I’m really looking forward to the trip and I dare say that a write-up and a couple of photos might be in order when I get back.

Agreed I think the West coast of Scotland must be one of if not the best place in the World to sail. I have been to quite a few of the Hebridean Islands but never made St Kilda so far. Roll on August.

I look forward to your write up and photos. Have you sailed across the Atlantic before?

First time crossing the Atlantic. I’ve been about a bit; Scotland, Ireland, Scandinavia, Mediterranean (east to west and bits in-between), Great Lakes but never across the pond.

Do you sail regularly? What kind of boat are you going to St Kilda in?

Graham,

I started sailing about four years ago and get out when I can. I have only sailed in British waters on yachts and nearly all that was off the West coast of Scotland. I am in a club who charter yachts every now and again. We will be on a 48' Jeanneau Trinidad when we got to St Kilda. It is great and I have had a few adventures. Been rescued by the lifeboat after a fire during the night in a force 8 off Kerrera - quite an adventure amongst other things.

Cheers,

Ken.

Don’t fancy the Atlantic in that. Wouldn’t hold enough beer to get me 3.5K miles.

Ideal for a bit of camping though :D

1 metre waves in the Atlantic swell are not much fun

Mack I am also a sea kayaker - built my own fibreglass sea kayak a few years ago and have great fun. On my past few sailing trips I have lashed a river kayak onto the dingy in the yacht which has meant I have been able to kayak in some amazingly remote places. I have to admit being out in the Minch in a river kayak can be pretty hairy at times.
