.....it'll be 5 - 10 years of some degree of pain, then things will settle and the Scottish economy will probably be stronger......

Great Ross, so I would get all the pain and none of the gain.

Hmm. He says "you will see over the next few days a plan to give more tax powers, more spending powers and more powers over the welfare state."

This new (sorry, existing) plan will be announced in the next few days and, Osborn believes, this is what the Scotch want. Although not what the Scotch wanted when Cameron refused to put DevoMax on the referendum.
It's a bit disappointing that they are only coming out with this now, as if they have not been taking it seriously until now and panicking a bit. Makes me wonder why they want the union so much (must be something in it for them) and also makes me think I should change my mind.

Didn't think that would happen but I was encouraged by the fact that the Scottish Parliament has at least some Tory and Lib Dem MP's represented currently.

The no campaign have not done well at all, they have said nothing positive about keeping the Union that I have heard and seems it's all scaremongering. Todays point from Ed Milliband of looking at putting up border control is just ridiculous.

This can't be doing the Labour party in Scotland any good whatsoever, which is nice!
My point was that I agree with everything you have said and don't understand how this is not in breach of the "purdah". They are moving the goal posts.

I have a Labour friend who is dead against as he sees way more Tory MSPs in an indie Scotland and the death of Labour dominance.

re Ed Milliband - what is he for? Anyone? Other than using air that someone else could be using.

Does Salmond ever talk about devomax being removed from the ballot?
I found a Youtube repeat of a BBC news broadcast that was talking about the Edinburgh agreement. It said Salmond wanted DevoMax but lost, Cameron didn't want 16 year olds to vote (or women, or anyone without property) and lost.

Can't find it again and I made up the bit about women and property owners.

i think what is excluded in purdah is gov published things. So, UK gov cant publish something.
But parties could.

From what I read (not saved the links) Hardline SNP stopped Devo Max option as they want indy at any cost, and Hardline Tory stopped Devo Max as they didnt want any more powers to Westminster (I think someone said "a line in the sand").
Extremists...

That was my understanding too, SNP wise, but I couldn't find anything to support it.

There is a "purdah" in force (which is my new word for the day) which if I understand it correctly says the govt won't initiate any new policies in the period between the campaign starting and the election, that m,ay influence hte outcome.

Yet yesterday Osborne goes on TV and says "Vote No and we'll give you more powers!"

Did I misunderstand it?

more powers for the Scottish parliament were promised by Cameron when the arrangements for the referendum were set out 18 months ago -

Anybody hear the whole speech by Johann Lamont tonight

- very very good speech

- if only all the yes voters had heard it

- if only Darling was half as articulate -

but I repeat my question - does anyone believe Salmond - and think there is a chance of a currency union? or that Cameron/Clegg/Milliband are bluffing when they declare there will not be under any circumstances?

Blimey... I thought you disappeared way back on 24th April when someone asked you for your very own (ie not a cut/paste of someone else's) opinion on being Better Together.

Robert Peston's view.

"But if the Westminster government maintains its current position, which is that there would be no monetary union with an independent Scotland, then at the moment of formal separation, those RBS, Clydesdale and Bank of Scotland notes would be a foreign currency in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The Bank of England would feel obliged to revoke their status as legal tender, because without a detailed monetary union pact (something Tories, Labour and LibDems all say they won't brook) it would no longer have the power to limit the number of Scottish bank notes in issue - and without that power, the rest of the UK would be vulnerable to the risk that excessive Scottish note issuance would impair the value of the rest-of-UK pound."

Ah but I think you'll find Scottish notes aren't actually legal tender at the moment. I'd have thought Mr Peston would have known that

Forgive me

I actually started the thread so that I could hear scottish opinion rather than put my own

however Since april I have had to go to four funerals of people very c;lose to me - the last my mother, so honestly - I really did hope to just start a proper, informed debate in Scotland, at least on this forum

- sadly precious little of that seems to have happened, at least until the speech tonight by Johann

- I really hope everyone in Scotland heard it.

Sorry to hear of your sad news.

There's been a huge amount of debate in Scotland, I doubt the electorate has been this engaged for decades. Some of it has been educated, some less so. I think where you think the education lies very often depends on which side of the political divide you sit, I haven't heard much in the way of educated speaking from the fragrant Johann but I'm prepared to believe it is at least possible. Do you have a link?
