Actually if I booked all the flights in advance it would probably be cheaper than installing sky just to watch the F1.

Not just as a TV station, but as a resource which develops world class talent and skills.

But f*ckit, if it gives some sleazeball politician a ticket into government off the back of saving a few quid, what does that matter, eh? The reason the Beeb lost F1 is due to the massive government pressure to cut budgets, that's the sole reason. And it stinks.
Well said! :thumbsup

I've said on a number of occassions over the past few years, right from the first GP that the beeb transmitted after ITV, that I was more than happy to pay the licence fee for that sort of thing.
Combine it with things that the beeb seem to do better than anyone else such as Sherlock, Life On Mars, Top Gear (well, some weeks!) and it really is something Britain should be proud of.

I sometimes wonder though, if some sort of advertising compromise can be made (usually when watching the beeb advertise it's own shows).
Couldn't we just have a single ad at the beginning/end of a show, generate a little income and allow the licence fee to remain the same (or drop by a token fiver or something) then have like "Top Gear - Presented by Toyota" but no other ads. I'm sure companies would pay a fair what for such exclusivity, and as a viewer, nothing would really change!
I suppose the ideal and the reality are never the same mind.

They just showed part of the '93 European GP.

Wet race, Senna was fifth off the line and up to first before the end of the first lap. Even though he stopped for tyres for a record number of times, wets, slicks, wets, had a screwed up pit stop, then drove through the pits as the team were not ready for him, he won by 1min 23 secs and lapped the whole field including Schuey and Prost, apart from Hill.

Clark used to do the same thing.

Well like everyone else I'm not happy about this, but looking on the positive side, at least we will be retaining some BBC coverage which could have gone completely. If ITV couldn't afford to keep the rights then I'm pleasantly surprised that the BBC have managed to keep what they have.

Nothing against the footballers, but maybe sky expect this to be similar in attracting new support . The less people who subscribe for the F1 the more likely it would end up back on BBC - it's a long term view but who knows.

The BBC format is a great mix of news / comment and informed views, they've done an excellent job to make the viewer feel part of the event. I seriously doubt if Sky would get close. Lets face it the pre hour program can be more interesting than the race itself, so it's a very important part of the coverage.

Anyway, good job BBC on retaining some coverage and I'll enjoy watching the highlights (hopefully from the far east so they'll be on at sensible o'clock)

I suspect there will be a bit of a backlash against Sky; I agree with your thought that the less people who subscribe the more likely it is to end up back on the BBC but it is a long contract.

Sky, as their profits announced today, are only interested in one thing (not that I blame them; they're a company, their sole objective should be to make money).

Why?

BBC didnt want to pay for the rights. Bernie wanted as much money as possible. So it went to someone else.

Its Bernie and the BBC that have made this happen.

Like i said earlier i dont think it's the right move, and that's even with my mixed loyalties but you can't blame sky.

I will watch BBC races live and highlights of the others. Have just ditched Sky as was fed up of being ripped off and have no intention of paying to watch F1.

I hope it results in a huge declinein UK viewing and gets ditched.

Have to agree with the morose quadruped here, Sky have done nothing wrong in wanting to build business. That said, doesn't mean I'll be extending my subscription. Maybe that's what TCs meaning?

Lets be honest, Sky's sports coverage, while flash, is usually cringeworthy and hugely influenced by how the states do it. Orange presenters and way too much artificial drama and pointless CGI - so why would people pay for worse than what the Beeb do so well?

It will get Sky more viewers and for them that is the main exersize, wither theny make money out of it I don't know as both are brodcasting the race in HD and the same feed it will come down to who can add the best value to the broadcast wither through comentry or something else, the BBC have done really well with their coverage so it will be hard to beat. Sky may do it better who knows.

The only other factor is what races do sky have that the BBC don't ? the good ones ????

As for the licence fee I honestly don't mind it even if I had sky alot of what I would watch would probablybe on the public service broadcasters BBC/CH4. (although discovery would be good)

its rubbish.

i was gonna afford a new telly earlier this year, with a Sky package to get great reception and HD, then roof leaks and car problems put paid to that. - As Martin knows :-(

"Never mind, its still free on my CRT", i thought.

And now this... i cannot afford to get Sky AND Sky Sports (and I bet the practice and qually and races will come < football, golf so expect it on Sky Sports 2,3,4).
So thanks to whoever thought that would be a great idea.

I love F1, watch it at 6am when its on, and this strikes a blow to the heart of it and me.

This all happened to English premiership (thats football for all you girls  ) 8-10 years ago
