I am not finding this matter funny in the slightest.

Getting some personal amusement from an out of context quote like that is pretty sick, don't you think?

You need to have a severe word with yourself, Gareth.

I had absolutely no idea about this, and it seems that others (including Tut, who obviously attends a lot of events and is well known!) didn't know either.

I'm now wondering what else that I and others don't know that others on here are happy to hide, about people who I may bring bring into my life / home via forum recommendations.
I knew nothing about it. The only comment I have on this thread is one that I hope will be seen as constructive.

I would never allow strangers into my home, or even let them know where I live. I would class people I'd met on the internet as strangers (sounds a bit callous to say that, but that's all we are regardless of the "community" mantra) until I'd met them face to face.

If anyone is worried about what skeletons people they "meet" here (or on any forum) have in their cupboard, don't give out personal details or information or invite them round to your home or tell them where you live until you trust them. The internet can lead people into a false sense of security. Don't be caught out by that.

It's a sad fact. And changing the forums to being viewable by members only (as Chris requests) wouldn't solve the core issue - that of trust being given out too lightly. In fact, my opinion is that it would illicit more implied 'trust' when there's no real difference. I don't feel that the news would have come to light any quicker if the forums were closed to members, I don't think that was a factor at all - after all, it was in the public arena anyway, I think it was more a case of nobody wishing to 'point the finger' or single out the news - a private forum would have increased that reticence, not decreased it.

To repeat - a closed forum is no safer and actually breeds more implicit trust where one should be wary.

It just serves to remind us that even the people we 'speak to ' on a daily basis through internet forums are often really unknown to us.
It is hard to hear that someone you know is involved ( at whatever level) in something that is so abhorent to the rest of us.

I was both shocked and saddened when I read the original post.

With regards to Ali there was nothing to hide as he wasn't trading, wasn't online and wasn't likely to turn up at your house as he was in jail. So even if it had been posted on here earlier it would have made no difference at all......as no-one COULD have any dealings with him.

That aside, as others have said it's one thing saying "ali, i'd recommend him to clean your car" and another thign entirely to say "yes i'd happily leave him all day in your house with your kids"

We need to keep some perspective here.

To Shug's point, i dont think a closed forum would have made much difference but i am MUCH more wary about what i post on here, in comparison to a closed forum i frequent.

EDIT : changed some of the language slightly....
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

I agree 100%. Thanks Lewis for posting.

Kenny, I have pics of the wee one in the bath and some of her running around the livingroom naked (taken to emarrass her when she is older) but I would never post those pics online and in fact I am weary of posting any of the kids. But I'm also not on Faceplook as I'm generally quite cautious anyway.

I am not actually sure what would costitute kiddie porn, not that I really want to know but I would think it would have to be fairly obvious to be convicted of it, no?

I take it we all missed Simon's thread "things you wish you'd never posted" that also quoted the above and which, judging by it's disappearance and the replys I and a few others left, he wishes he'd never posted.

I'd certainly never head of anything in this manner to do with AR before this, but as others have said, therre's a lot that goes untyped. And things that should stay untyped.

I am never likely to meet Ally again, so I will think of him as we last saw him. He stayed overnight twice when doing the two cars, loved Khan who slept on his bed all night.

I feel sadness rather than anger, though that would have changed if it had gone any further.

It was someone else I think, not Simon.
I didn't see what was there originally but wondered if it had something to do with this thread given one of the responses.

No, it was Simon. Guilty as charged.

Sorry, my mistake.

I've edited my original post so as not to incriminate a completely innocent party.

Nothing wrong with original post.

Can we not all go back to sorting out track days, camping trips and generally having a laugh. All this serious talk is getting a bit boring.

I'm quite shocked.

Only met him once when he came to work to buy some wax.

Heard a rumour that there was some kind of court case (hence I didn't reply in the most recent thread asking if he was still detailing) but the rumour in the detailing circles was that he'd been fighting or something.
