It's not really my opinion, it's the way it is.

Show me the dismal engine that out performs the same petrol engine?

(And by same i mean turbo petrol vs turbo dismal of the same configuration)

Using these criteria, the petrol equivalent will outperform the diesel, but this involves using all the revs in each gear.

Using a more realistic everyday road driving style (say using no more than 3k revs) the diesel gains its advantage.

Now, I appreciate this is a very generic statement and there will always be individual cases which will buck this (and I'm sure you'd jump on in a suitably and unnecessarily abrasive manner), but this cannot be argued.

The day you accept people are all different and have different tastes in everything, will be the day you find yourself spending less time in dispute over rather futile arguments.

So, you have just accepted the point that dismal is more compromised?

So, as i said up top, if mpg were not in the equation, nobody would buy a dismal car would they?

Why is it so hard to accept this simple point?

People who prefer a lazier driving style will prefer diesel, people who don't want to be stirring the gears, people who want the abundance of low down torque, people who want a higher mpg - how does that make it more compromised????? , a diesel is better in some circumstances just accept that! We prefer petrol but it doesn't make it better in every scenario.

So a V8 C63amg has no torque?

Or a fiesta eco boost is without torque?

Come on guys, take a step back and see the bigger picture.

Just buying a Honda CR-V 2.2Dti and fortunately I kept the chip that I had on the Motability Civic which was the same engine.

Once I fit that it will dick any petrol engined car, AMG's would not get a look in.

You can just see it over breakfast in the morning:

"Tea or coffee darling? I'm having coffee."

"Tea of course, how can anyone like coffee, tea is vastly superior in every way, and anyone who says otherwise just doesn't understand the facts about hot beverages. That is not an opinion, its the way it is. Try and see the bigger picture!"

"Sigh, you know best dear......" :D :D

You find it difficult to accept that many people on here ( all car enthusiasts). would choose a diesel over a petrol for day to day real world driving, and not necessarily for cost reasons!

I certainly have, and i would find it difficult to go back to the equivilant petrol now for a daily runner. The dynamics of a modern turbo diesel ( or twin turbo in my case) are far superior. Even if they were to cost the same to run, I would not swap mine!

Cost is certainly a benefit, but not the main decider for me, and many others!

I have just placed an order for a 335d xdrive, I didn't consider for a minute the 335i, and I have driven both. The 335d linked to an 8 speed box, give a much smoother delivery, and real world performance is far superior.

By the way, are you always this argumentative, or is it because you have a storm approaching.......and everybody else on SELOC is battening down the storm hatches? :D

Enough of the abuse. Feel free to have a sensible debate along the lines of "if petrol were free, who would buy a diesel and why". Abusive posts will be deleted without further notice.

i had the 535 diesel(3litre twin turbo). despite its grunt its a totally forgettable motor. i got bored of the racket in less than a year. didnt ever crack 30mpg either. prior to that i had a 3litre NA straight 6 petrol. no where near the grunt but had real soul and not far off the mpg of the diesel

640d it is all but silent with a slightly "nice" growl at revs! 8 speed ZF box - last 420 miles 48mpg. It continues to evolve. Even daily driver around town and out to the house is 35mpg.

Definitely voting yes now, good old Alex has ensured that the storm is only going to hit England and Wales and miss Scotland completely.
