That looks the business Doc!

I am very tempted to splurge some cash on a shiney new road bike.... but should start using the bikes I have first of all!

Only had her for 24 hours but did our Chain Gang last night and scored a PB and a KOM so result.

I do like a challenge and I did Teide in Feb when I was over in Tenerife for a stag do. It was hard work but I do now have an impressive biggest climb on my strava profile!

A trip down after Le Mans next year could happen. Did you hire bikes there or travel down with your own bike?

I'm using mine so much more than I did my other bikes, you know it makes sense

I took my own bike but in hindsight I wished I had hired as they had some stunners right across the road from our hotel here:

A part of my thinking (same part of brain that operates man maths) suggests that if I got a new bike, that would motivate me to get out on it.... but the demands I have on my time just now makes me concerned that the new bike would get used once every 6 months...

I bought a new saddle and bar tape and it achieved the same goals. Strava has really helped too.

I didn't go for a road bike when i bought the surly as it didn't work for me and that hasn't changed. You went through similar thoughts

.....although i appreciate it's not always a logical need when it comes to toys

Etape Royale attendees?
Only one other SE'er appeared on my strava, finished within a few minutes of each other, a celebratory driving version of the same loop might have to be done!

pride of my garage isn't the elise, I have my departed best mates ex SCUMB (come on scotty!) winning 93 Explosif, I had a 94 with law hill forks, we raced together yolks ago. plus my 91 rock lobster is still alive, actually needs a bit of restoration, tempted to SS it. I am not a serial spender but i find it very hard not to grow my bike collection stupidly just now. Some really nice vintage/retro bikes all around as technology appears to be making smaller and smaller advances, some of the MTBs of the 90s are just frightening to look at think, f**k i rode down that on this contraption! Trying to coax the flying scot away from my father in law, its just hanging unused in his garage...

VERY nice

I owned a '93 Kilauea (Tange Prestige Concept and probably my favourite steel frame I've ever owned) and lusted after the '93 Explosif's fluted/ribbed downtube!

I was there, great day for it although pretty cold for the first couple of hours. Riding in a fast pack in the dark was incredible, glued to the tail light in front hoping no one braked. The closed road aspect made it for me, especially going down the Lecht hitting the apexes all the way with chin on bar. Finished in 5h45, I estimated 6 so very pleased with that. Had the weather been nasty, different story.

I was there too. Like Robin, the fast pack in the dark was the highlight for me. I also followed advice on seloc & tucked in behind a tidy blonde pony tail after a few miles. Sadly my ability to go up hills was as poor as I'd feared & I was dropped when the going got steeper.

It was cold enough as it was, feet were like ice until 60+ miles, would have been awful in the wet. Especially as I camped the night before.

My event nearly came to an end at mile 88 at the peak of the large climb after the Lecht; the deralliur hanger snapped. I'd neatly bough a spare earlier in the month, doh! After resigning myself to a DNF, what I'd thought was the trailer full of broken bikes arrived after quite a wait. Turns out those were the event spare bikes. After a few seconds deliberation I was handed a trek & back on my way. Overall time was pretty poor with the hour or so wait, but cycling time was 7 hours. Had planned 6.30/ 6.40 so a bit disappointed tbh, legs weren't fresh & I've a lot of work to do on the climbs.

Have raised nearly £1000 for MS Scotland so far though, so happy with that.
