The K-series engine is sh*t. True Story.
Re: The K-series engine is sh*t. True Story.
That should probably read as the latest Rover HG Robin, just remember a long thread on it by the knowledgable that the fancy expensive ones were not recommended, but that Rover had improved on the standard one and that did the best job.

Is that the Freelander head gasket?

The one Tut is reffering to sounds like the Freelander one LR did under Ford ownership.
There's also a so called Chinese gasket develpoed for the K series derived N series used in the last run of the MG TF & possibly some Roewe cars in China. The N is apparently extremely similar & the gasket fits but comes as a kit that inclused a different strength of long bolt, strengthened ladder & requires a different torquing procedure.
I'm with Robin on this.

That probably means pulling it apart every year or after a handful of trackdays. And even then, you may have to accept that it's going to fail randomly from time to time. Just like race engines do...
Limiting revs can have a huge bearing on lifespan of a K. The original Minister R500 K in 2000 went to 9200rpm, and was recommended to be "refreshed" every 3k miles with track use, this was later reduced to 8600rpm for longevity. My Minister R400 K went to 8k, produced only 30 horses less (200) and had no such issues. The subsequent owner had it refreshed at circa 30k, and even then it was a case of preventative maintenance thrown in with some titivation
- But that is exactly what you would expect from any non OEM build of ANY manufacturer's engine where OEM tolerences were not even remotely respected
ie massively out of dynamic balance, and use of single size bearing which = far too large bearing clearances
if you haven't read it try ;-

Very good question Tut - I remember that thread too from a few years ago about KingK designing and helping Stu to build a K to beat a Honda!tut wrote:What happened with your KingK engine Stu?

Hope it's here before they discontinue petrol......
Re: The K-series engine is sh*t. True Story.
Pretty much a year to the day since the Honda was installed.
So far it's been more reliable than the K series ever was, for Euro trips anyway. And fastererer too.
What's not to like?!
The King K is dead.... Long live King Honda!
