My mate Calum sells HD cameras - they connect wifi, hold a micro sd.
Records to sd card when something happens in front of the camera. Also sends it to your iPhone
I think Abus make them
Let me know if you want more info or a demo after your work.......

There appears to be a lot of plug and play monitoring options now. Looked at a couple that send phone alerts and allow voice messages to be transmitted although some of these have ridiculously expensive monthly fees. There are some similar cheap cameras on e-bay and Amazon that look to do the same thing but I don't know enough about home systems to know if the cheaper kit is worthwhile or simply cheap tat - anyone got any reccomendations?

We've 2x nest cameras installed at mums in October last year. Had a sub 1 week lead to find & fit cameras and something that was easy to install & low maintainnce. Not the cheapest but works very well with the app. My brother set up various zones to record movement in them (she has a budgie in frame of one camera but it's set so the budgie moving doesn't activate recording), can view remotely and it's easy to to review footage, esp where there's been any movement. Had the house alarm go off last month (false alarm, new back up battery fixed) could find when the police came to the house just after 4am & view very easily to a decent quality given the darkness.

I've got two of these.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/MAISI-Surveilla ... =ip+webcam

Android and iOS client - dead easy to set up and good pic quality. I can pan and zoom in from anywhere in the world.

Nowhere near as nice looking or as subtle as some options but works really well save for the odd reboot.

EDIT : Same camera, £10 cheaper

Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

My plan to get a CCTV camera tonight was scuppered by a TEXT from my credit card company to advise my card was cancelled and would be replaced in 7 days due to records at a retailer we used recently being compromised. !!!!
A phone call back to them with the threat of cancelling and a new card will be couriered to me tomorrow.
(I know I could just get the CCTV with a debit card but at least there is more protection and comeback with a cc)

After break in recently I'm going down the NAS solution route. Going to see if the synology surveillance station is any good. Have already purchased two POE dome cameras to use with it. But as usual finding time to play with those is difficult. Hopefully get them out the box they came in this weekend. I'll report back on performance etc

Be interested to hear how you get on neither it Ferg. Looking to set some up at mine as well, need to be able to remote monitor them though and as the garage is detached from the house need to find a way to link up garage to house units (maybe through power cables but that usually wrecks the resolution from what I have seen.

Scheduled recording to SD card or it can take a snap shot when it detects movement.

Compare QNAP with Synology Ferg. I don't know which is best, but it's another similar NAS-based option. Check camera compatibility lists too.

Right, I'll confess to having pretty much no idea about this stuff and don't know what QNAP/ Synology etc is. Anybody will to shine some light on the subject? I've just been looking at off the shelf kits from the likes of Swann but I have to say really like the look of your kit Sanjoy. I'm tempted to try something like that instead. Probably 4 camera system with 1 being on detached garage. Any suggestions/info much appreciated!

already running a beefy Synology so no investment needed there for me. Camera copatibility list was first port of call. :thumbsup

SImon. The Qnap and synology are Network Attached Storage. So big banks of hard disks. They tend to come with built in CCTV software with a few free licenses. As I have one already I'm going to see if the camera software is any good.

If I was starting from scratch and had no direct interest in a NAS, then a stand alone system is a good starting point. You can pretty much get one for any budget. There are also individual cam systems like the ones David referred to where the cameras have everything internal. They make it very simple but I have no experience of them to comment on capability. :)

Thanks Ferg :thumbsup

Will try the stand alone system I was looking at them for ease I think.
