You can pick them up for a lot less than that. Cheap as chips to run and from what I remember EVO saying, one of the best handling FWD cars ever built, a good one is surely not going to loose you anything.
Not sure if they have air con however.
Would have loved a Ford Racing Puma but in reality they are not £6-7k more fun that a standard 1.7 Puma. Had a standard Puma for a couple of years (sold it for my S1 Elise) and absolutely cracking cars and would have one again in an instant (without the flaky rear quarter that the majority of them seem to be suffering from).

I thought the Racing Puma's were supposed to be poorly developed, wheels rubbing on the arches for one

(that's why I think Mike will do fine, that and his lack of imagination).

i think this is one of the best threads of 2011 so far.
So many interesting cars, and so many memories from looking at them, be they pups, mongrels or whatever.
Makes me want to add to the current 7

Must admit it is threads like this that make me think that I need a more usable car. I don't mind the cold and wet but I simply cannot afford to rip any more suits getting in and putting the harnesses on. Could eat less pies I guess, worth its weight in carbon.

Its threads like this that make me want to scratch itches of old. I really REALLY want an RS cosworth. Just for a wee teesny weensy while.
As for Ed - we all know what he'll buy. Its always the way of these threads - "I was thinking X car, any alternatives?" and then X car is promptly bought. Eh Benny?

I had one from new, sold at 60k miles and a 1991 model that I got at 2 years old with 6k miles and racked up another 60k in the following 4 years, so 6-7 years old and about 70k miles on it when I sold it. Never missed a beat - no issues at all apart from sponge like roof seals that gradually soaked up water until they could take no more & then leaked like hell, and some flaky trim .
I would imagine a well looked after regularly serviced one would be a good proposition.

But expect 20mpg and heavy bills if the engine goes bang.
I took the brief as something for ff for ed.
Surely 20mpg is irrelevant for that trip and actually pretty good for what it is..........
If the brief is just what can you buy for 10k, then that's a different matter, I would be far less worried about a BMW engine that's had vanos done at 85k than some of the other suggestions here.

I'd buy then sell after FF (or rent).
Finding a car that will be fun on track/comfy for long distance/liked by the wife/costing £10k won't be easy

Elise S1, I can testify.
But apparently that was ruled out. Too obvious, presumably!

The S1 elise is NOT comfy on long distances for FF. It can be 35-40 degrees and there is no break for 10 days, hence why Ed wants Aircon.
