VX220....

I was considering one before the Lotus....

But i have just (and only because i was bored) had a look through Autotrader and noticed how cheap they are going now!!!

Was a bit amazed - still love the cars all the same.

Is this because the cold weather is creeping in or because they dont hold their value well?

They do have the wrong badge on the front for some ppl,
Although the Opel ones in Ireland seem to hold their value a little better ~that and I keep seeing them debadged although from what I remember there were only 2000 Vauxhall VX220's and 1000 Opel Speedsters
Generally the Astra engine in them is very reliable

I take it the VX is a lot more reliable than the Elise?

The black turbo model with red leather is actually v v v nice

Could never give up the Elise but if a VX came up cheap enough i am thinking of a second car for a project............ Just fancied some opinions

I must admit to seeing more of them being used daily rather than kept for special occasions and generally £3-4000 cheaper than a similar aged Elise

The biggest problem for most people is the badge.

Dynamically the biggest problem might be the weight. 875kg for the 2.2, significantly more lardy than an S1, but pretty close to S2 territoty? The Turbot was a good bit heavier again as the all ally 2.2 was replaced with the old pig iron Z20 LET.

Visually, some might just prefer the all-curves Lotus to the all curves VX, they're totally different.

I dont want to get into it too much on an Elise forum but I have been hanging around these parts for a few years now where temptation might become me, and I've still got my VX ;)

Just general discussion

Again, something about the Lotus just makes me never want to let go but interesting about the reliability - spoken to a few VX owners and never heard a bad word about them although one kept giving me excuses as to why he never bought a Lotus

Hehe...

I have driven mine daily for three and a half years now (the occasional winter banger saving it from salty road use) and it's never set a foot wrong.

You're right about the Astra engine being pretty much bomb proof, but there are things to watch out for (the maintenance free timing chain for example, might not be so maintenance free). The other downside is that it's not the sportiest engine out of the box, but it does have loads of low down torque. I may get flamed for this, this but on the runs I've been on with Elises I sometimes think I am a gear up from the cars in front (and no I'm not losing a huge amount of ground lol).

I'm considering retiring it from every day driving for a while and getting a small sh*t car for going back and forth to work, abandoning in town etc so I might get an Elise...  KIDDING! I'd love two VX/Elise cars, one to keep nice and one to use and abuse but money wise for me that'd be taking the piss. It'll be a Ka/Panda/Swift etc.

Happy to help with any Qs you have on the Vauxhall!

Closer to a 111R/Exige but K series S2s are about 800kg fully specced.
