Scottish Elises

Out for an Ayrshire run today with Pete to celebrate my car passing its MOT first time . Lovely day taking in some fine back roads then on to some single track.

Pete had got ahead at a junction so I was catching him up . Up ahead saw a white van coming toward us , Pete has stopped as the road had narrowed at a bend with no where to go .

What gets me is it was a clear straight, I started to brake fine then realised I was not stopping fast enough despite by best Walshy efforts.

Choices . 1.Plough in to the back of Pete who was into the left . Expensive , hard and Pete would not be happy . NO 2. Hit van head on . Expensive and hard . NO! 3. Go for the uninviting verge on the right and hope for the best . YES . so I went into the verge hitting a block from a bridge over a stream . Which was lucky as the the drop did not look very nice. Doh!

I reversed the car out without issue and surveryed the damage . Front clam and crash structure are damaged and I have a slightly sore neck .

Totally my fault though it was quite nice how Pete and the van driver wanted some blame too

Any recpmendations for a body shop ? I will be going through the my insurance

As long as your ok and it's only pride thats hurt

Unlucky that the verge had a fecking block of sandstone in it - would have been OK if it was just plants

sh*t mate Goudies at Kilmaurs are a good, more local, bodyshop.

That's next to Bagower farm, just outside Cumnock? I had both my first off's (as a passanger and driving) at the T junction at the brow of the hill there. Both Mini's though and fixed for about 5p.

Then there are the car-breaking yumps about a mile from there that I'd not like to take at over 50 in an Elise.

Never mind Ayrshire, avoid this road

Really sorry to hear this Alan. Glad it's just the car and that you're in one piece! Hope you get it all sorted without too much hassle and expense.

Cheers Guys . Considering the thump there is not that much visible damage , the fibreglass and crash structure are very effective at load absorbing.
My neck is getting quite sore now , time for some beers.

Bummer mate....at least it's only the car, though that's sore enough.....

These plastic cars a pretty tough!

Time for some blue gaffer tape and all will be fine .... I'm sure the 'shug' look will be in fashion soon enough!

Sounds like it Woody or very near, we were just outside Cumnock.

It was more a combination of things than just Alan - I'd pulled a bit ahead but hadn't realised and just as I cleared the brow of the hill saw the delivery van coming the other way. The van was going really quickly and I wasn't sure if the corner we were coming up to would take 2 abreast, especially with no white line and the van going so quick, so I backed right off then coasted to a stop. I didn't check Alan was behind me (v poor and not like me to be honest) partly because I'd got complacent, we were both travelling at the same speed, braking in the same places etc and I was concentrating on the van.
I don't remember seeing Alan until I heard the chhhh of a skidding tyre, I remember being quite smug as I thought it was the van locking up, until I saw a flash of blue as Alan went past me (and the van) and into the hedge, which was as always covering a wall.

Nice judegment on Alan's part (well after the intial stopping distance error ) to choose CDIT* over CDIL** or even CDIV***. I was stunned as it seemed to be somethnig and nothing and then suddenly he's in the verge.

Just as we were topping up with fuel before we set off, we were talking about the curse fo the Ayrshire runs (sounds like something you get off a dodgy pie), it would seem we somehow invoked the curse...

If he had been leading it could have been me (although he wouldn't have stopped for the van and if he had he might have seen me in his mirrors and got out of the way).
