Cheap Thrills

Post by Rich H » Sun Feb 05, 2006 2:21 pm

Hi gents,

The girlfriend is on about joining the Sprint club at her work but isn't too keen on taking her car (MX-5) and she's not having mine

Any suggestions for a cheap (£1000-£2000) sh*t that will be easy to maintain, tough as old nails and fun to run? I've been looking thru Autotrader and the few I have condidered are:

Mk1 Escort - Old school live axle thrills
Sierra XR4i - V6 noise and grunt
Pug 205 Gti - Hot-Hatch chaos

She'l probably change her mind by the time I've finished typing this, but it's worth a try!

Cheers
Rich

Hi Rich,
Its got to be a 205, I was looking at them on Pistonheads the other day. Still reckon the last 205 1.9 I owned would've been able to keep up with an Elise on the twisties, could be just fond memories though and they weren,t that reliable either. Another option might be a Corsa/Nova then drop a Chavalier 2.0 in it :)

Hi Rich

A 1.9 gti wouldn't have much of a chance, but the MI16 conversion has a good turn of pace.

The 1.9 in only slightly more powerful than the 1.6, the MI16 should be good for 160bhp and they will tak a lot of abuse.

... oh my choice would be a Mk1 Escort purely for laughs...

Good bloody luck finding one though.... Proper classic now (unless it's rallyed up, in which case it's megabucks anyway)

There was one at the autotest at Hamilton, where the chap had dropped an hemi in to the engine bay!

Not much doubt who was having the most fun and largest tyre bills that day

Cool,
My first 2 cars were mk.1 Escorts. I would've suggested the mk.1 but didn,t think you would get a decent one for under about £3k, if you are willing to take on a project like this though go for it :D
