MMC - Edinburgh - Service Cost - "A" Service

Post by a4drk » Tue Nov 06, 2007 7:27 pm

Anyone got any idea how much an "A" service would cost?

2001 S2 - 120bhp - Sports Tourer.

It had the big "C" service a year ago - cam belts etc.....
£740 bill! (Christopher Neil)

Also - I am assuming to keep the cars "value" up, i need to have full dealer history?

I had an A service done recently. Price options were:

MMC circa £340 for a standard A-Service.
Ali (SLS) circa £160 for standard A-Service
Falkland Performance Ctr circa £160 for standard A-Service

I dont think having any of the above service your car would have an adverse effect on its residual value.

For info, Ali did mine and will do so in the future.

Sorry no idea what a service from MMC would cost and am not in a position to recommend a specialist - never used one. All I wanted to add was that (without sounding disrespectful) you have a 6 year old car. How much longer do you intend to keep it?

I am not that certain paying hundreds of pounds on a dealer service will return you hundreds of pounds at sale time compared to either servicing it yourself or putting it to a less expensive(?) specialist.

My car is a 1999 and I can't really justify service costs of hundreds/thousand of pounds. Providing it is otherwise well maintained, I am never going to see that money again.

A healthy stack of receipts for parts, oil, filters and the condition of the car maybe worth just as much a couple of years further down the line.

you have to weight up the pro's and con's and how much the dealer stamp is actually worth, on a newish car dealer service history is probably a must but as the car get's older how much will you get back on your outlay ?

how much is
  • a full dealer service history worth?
  • a full dealer/specialist service history worth?
  • a partial service history worth?
  • no service history I couldn't be bothered and it's still running the original oil, worth?
I would say after a certain time (i.e. warrenty runs out) a specialist is as good as a dealer stamp and after a time again an enormous box of receipts and a guy telling you all that he has done is good as long as the car has been looked after.

Given the bad experiences of so many SEers over the years it is beyond me why anyone would even contemplate taking their car to MMC for anything other than warranty work. Proven again and again to provide, at very best, mixed quality of service, and the prices are ludicrous, even allowing for the usual main dealer overheads. Why should it cost so much more to service an Elise at a main dealer than, say, a BMW Z4? The service book stamp is a red herring too. Vast majority of used Lotus buyers are enthusiasts who are informed enough to know that any car they are looking at buying will probably have been better looked after by an independent specialist.
