My brain hurts...

Post by Rich H » Wed Jan 16, 2008 10:48 pm

Right brain teaser time...

Driveshafts on the Porker are worn, the new CV joints don't fit and I'm not paying £40 + vat each for ones that will fit.

I need to reverse the joints so the wear is on unworn parts of the joint. The driveshafts are the same both ends so can be fitted:

1-2 3-4 (How it is now)
2-1 4-3 (swap shafts round on the same side)
3-4 1-2 (Transpose shafts left to right)
4-3 2-1 (Transpose and swap)

I reckon that 3-4 1-2 will work but the girlfriend reckons 4-3 2-1 works..

My brain hurts... can someone please explain it to me :? :scratch

You could cheat and put a rotation arrow on each before removal to ensure you have swapped the direction of rotation

That would be easy, but its not that easy as you have to get the driven surfaces swapped over.. you need to get the torque reversed...

I'm with the Gf on this one.

To rotate the other way you would need to take the right hand side off and stick the bit that came out of the gearbox back into the gearbox on the left hand side.

Do it with a broom handle without moving your hands off and you'll get the right permutation.

Worked it out on the way to work, its the torque that needs reversing, not the direction, so as long as the shafts swap sides it works out fine. I'm going to fit the LH outer to the RH inner so the wear is totally different.

Cheers guys
