Haggling for cars...

Post by Rich H » Sat Jan 19, 2008 9:14 pm

SWMBO is looking at changing her MX-5 for a newer one. She found one today, a 1.8 sport, 2002, 12month waranty leather and most of the options. They are also offering top £££ for her old one. Its well priced too.

I'm a bit suspicious of it, but givne the 12 month Mazda warranty it doen't really matter.

I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow, but I am notoriously crap at haggling, does anyone have any top tips?

Cheers

Tell them what you want to pay and walk away if they say NO. Am sure they will call you back.

Do a sales job on the salesman. Befriend him, get him on side, make him feel good, then hit him with a low offer. Focus on the satisfaction you'll get when you negotiate a good deal. Remember, he'll be making good money on the sale, despite what he'll lead you to believe.

Don't forget Louise's best line: "I have the money to do the deal today, but only if it's the right deal... I'm in no hurry to change cars, I can wait for the right deal" Worked a treat when she bought her last car. Let them know that you have done your research; "there is another car similar at another dealer we are going to see" is another good line to drop in (but make sure there really is (somewhere).

Watch out for the salesman bringing in his sales manager to 'close the sale' with the VERY best deal that they can manage.... stick to your figures

As ex motor trade agree with both Dom and Craig, when put in situation the people that got what they wanted were those that were up front, told me they had the money to do the deal today, however only if the price is right.

Never feel embarrassed about haggling, far too many people walked into the showroom, find a car, sit down sign the paperwork and walk off happy. At the end of the day, you will know if said car is priced well or not, if it is overpriced then point that out, and the price you would do the deal for. I find the sales manager coming out situation quite funny, as if i ever went to consult my sales manager, it was usually because at the end of the day he had to authorise every discount given!

At the end of the day, in most cases the salesperson doesnt want to loose anything out of the deal either, especially if is as is commonly the case their commission is linked to the profit left in the deal.

If the car is priced right Rich, and you cannot see much movement happening, make sure you barter for easier things like 12 months Road Tax, Full Tank of petrol, new matts and accessories at the time of doing the deal as you will have more joy getting accessories for a better price!

Just my 2p!

Dave

and 12 months tax and a full tank of fuel is already built into the price so ask for it. but wait till your just about to go for it last min stuff, and if they say no stand up and start to walk out, the "i will have to check with my manager" line is a load of guff.

Cool cheers chaps.

It is very well priced, but will press and see what I can get I think its well priced as they have 4 other MX-5s sitting of the forecourt already, but still wary....

Go in next week or beginning of the week after. The closer to the end of the month the better. They will have targets to hit and usually bend more at the end of the target period.

I always try to do that with big purchase, works really well. Avoid pay day weekends as it would be busy with everyone else.

I just bought a car - week before Christmas, when they were pretty dead, got nearly a 1/4 off the car :)

After being a Car Saleman for 5 months......
best advice is to go into the showroom, 1 hour before closing. (especially at weekends)
by the time you look at the car, test drive etc, it's getting nearer to home time for the sales guys.
If they have had a bad day, i.e. not on target, PROVIDING YOU ARE IN A POSITION TO BUY, you can negioate a stonking deal......

Good ideas all!

Private would be great but with the curent one (98S) having recently failed an MOT on rusty sills (!) I want a warranty, get loads of other goodies with the warranty too like a years recovery.

I'm going to take a look at it today, if it passes mechanical test then the haggling will beign... Can't wait until next week as we are away, but can wait until later today....
