I recently had the mother of all virus's on my home computer and decided the best option was to wipe it and reinstall XP , only now i am having a few problems

1 I have no sound at all i think this may be something to do with the soundcard as it doesnt seem to find one?

2 my screen either has massive text or tiny text i dont seem to get it back to where it was originally?

3 Im sure this one is relatively simple - my keyboard settings seem to be wrong as my number keypad doesnt work and the symbols seem to have moved onto different keys?

As you may have guessed im no computer expert so any suggestions welcome

All sortable out Ian, but really the best bet is if you have anybody nearby that is computer literate, and I mean to Old Deer standard and not Southern Scotland, then ask them to call around and sort it out for you.

It may have defaulted to the US keyboard setting (ie " not being above the 2, and I think the @ sign buggers of somewhere else too).

I think if you go in to control panel, I think there is an option for Languages & Regions... or something like that

Ok, it sounds like for points 1 and 2 you need to get some drivers installed for XP to recognise the computers hardware correctly. Should be pretty straightforward after a few questions if i may.

1. What make and model of PC is it?
2. Did you use a standard XP installation disk or a manucacturers recovery disk to install from?

O.k Ive tried resetting the language to english UK but doesnt seem to have made a difference still got a @ above my 2 and " where the @ should be ??

I used the standard XP disk to reinstall after deleting partition and basically putting the thing back to scratch.

Its an ASUS T-3 p5

Yup, that helps a lot There's 2 versions of that PC however, one with the 945 chipset and one with the 965 chipset. I'll go with the 965 first

You'll need to download and run the following 2 files to get your graphics and sound back up and running...

Oh, and as ASUS has packed these as RAR archives, a copy of winRAR is needed to get at the files inside.

You may also need a keyboard driver dude... is it a USB one or a PS/2 connected?

Cheers Steve I just found a disc containing 4 drivers for sound and graphics and yip you were right it was the 965 edition

Still no further forward with the keyboard settings though?

It is a keyboard that came with the PC or did you buy it seperately? If a seperate one, did you get a disk? (assume it's a 101/102 key job)

Start/Settings/Control Panel/System... Hardware tab then Device manager... drill down to keyboard and see what device you have. If you right click you should be able to check for updated drivers...

I dont have an xp machine here, but gorrie's spot on... You might need to rummage around the tabs on the languages screen and change it in a few places.

On server 2003, you need to go to the Languages tab -> details button and make sure english (uk) is listed there too. If you see english (us) then thats why the keyboard mapping is wrong.

Can you go back to the Regional & Languages bit... click the 'Languages' Tab and then click details. Do you have UK & US English in the bigger box at the bottom... and what is the 'Default input Language' in the top box? Should be UK.

You can also try looking at 'Key Settings' and see if it's possible to switch between language modes (Left Alt & Shift on mine).

I've a feeling that maybe you checked just the 1st screen last time round which is really just about how you like money and stuff displayed (ie £ or $ etc)
