Inspired by my visit to Kames yesterday, I'm now on the hunt for a helmet

From experience I much prefer wearing an open faced helmet. Are there any restrictions or regulations about wearing these for track days ? I don't recall seeing anyone wearing an open faced lid yesterday, which makes me wonder if they are permitted.

I won't be doing anything competitive, just the odd track day, so looking at a cheapie OMP one that has caught my eye.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Nah, no restrictions regarding open face lids on track days...Although if you're blagging pax laps in an Atom / aero screened Seven, you'll be wanting a full faced lid...

Doesn't need to be a car helmet either...A motorbike one will do...Just so long as it's BSA approved, and, most importantly, is of a good fit...

If you're only going to do the odd track day, I'd go for the cheapest BSA approved lid...If you're going to do lots, I'd maybe stretch the budget for a slightly more expensive helmet...

Look after it (i.e. keep it in a soft bag / clean it etc), and it'll last for years...

Open face ones are fine as is any old motorbike one for non-competitive use.

I will got for cheap one you can find on ebay. No point spending much money on them. There are a plenty of them.

I had an open face helmet on yesterday. I bought it years ago for rallying use, where open face helmets are more suited. In anything other than a caterham/atom I prefer it.

IIRC the final instructions for the Javelin TD at East Fortune in Mar '06 stipulated full face for open cars... which would incl a Se7en type vehicle if that's at all a consideration...

Also IIRC Sanjoy had a new open helmet for that day... so perhaps Sanjoy can comment?

I don't believe we did talk yesterday Mass. I did see your Club Racer appearing at one point but I never noticed who got out of it. Expect to see me at a track day very soon though......holding you up on the track probably

Cheers for the feedback on this, I'm deffo going to go for an open faced helmet now. Even that picture of Woody wearing one isn't enough to deter me The OMP ones on ebay look like good value so I think I'll take a punt on one of these.

When I get my Atom I'll just need to upgrade my helmet at the same time

IIRC, they also said the lids had to be MSA approved... then handewd out utter antiques as their 'rental' lids

Sanj's lid was one of those weird moped style helmets with a full visor down to the chin. There's a great photo of him somewhere facing the wrong way, on the grass

Nice one Cammy. Might try and check it out this week - I'm looking for a helmet after Kames on Saturday too.

I have a takachi tk-30 full face from my bike, and that's what I use.

Around 40 quid from eBay, fits nicely, it's quite comfy, and if you've ever borrowed a lid from Knockhill for pax/karting/experience days, it's exactly what they use.

That said, i'm doing a direct access bike course soon and if I end up with a bigger bike, i'll be investing in a nicer lid!
