MOT today: what'll it fail on?

Post by tuscan_thunder » Fri Mar 20, 2009 12:31 pm

Car's getting its Mot today. I expect a fail but nae sure what'll be wrong.

I reckon it'll maybe have some problem with suspension bushes and maybe corroded brakes discs (car hadn't moved for weeks until yesterday and they weren't looking too hot).

It has a year old cat in so I hope the emissions part isn't going to be an issue. Probably be something else wrong as well though

Good Luck :thumbsup

I always have good luck with emmisions :D, apparently dead spiders that have crawled up in to your exhaust work just as well when they burn.

Mine in two weeks time - here's hoping Ricky gets through with the emissions (No cat, pre-June 98 kit car, so regs = no cat needed. :? )

Pretty sure G got nailed for that one. Doesn't it make a difference if it's Caterham factory built i.e. VIN plates shows it wasn't a kit car...? :?

Either way it's a stupid situation - if big cars are okay as long as they are taxed harder then why are some cars illegal due to the emmisions (waits for some smart arse to explain the difference between oxides, dioxides, sulphates etc etc  )

It does make a difference Mat you are right. Even though its pre-98, if its factory built it needs a cat (applicable back to 91 * It think*), and even with a cat you will need everything crossed and a following wind for a pass Phil. Good luck.

And for your info, Ricky interpreted the "rules" by the book. But depending who mots it, it can seem to be interpreted in different ways.
As I said before, maybe you should be looking at the Emerald sooner rather than later

Cats (the exhaust kind, not the car, nor the furry variety for that matter) and MOT's are odd.

I assume from what i've read here that a factory built Caterham fits in the catagory with every other car, and needs a car if it was manufactured from 91 onwards.
Obviously the kit car regulations are a bit different, so home built cars are different.

Seems pretty straight forward so far...

We used to have a 1994 Mini Tahiti. Regular 1.3 A-Series engine, but one of the very last with a carb. I queried with my local MOT station about removing the cat (it looked like it was heading towards blowing, and cat replacement pipes were MUCH cheaper than a new cat!)
I was told that whilst the car looked like it was a carb model, it was clearly a fuel injection engine. I argued to the point that the guy told me to bring it in so he could point out my error. When I arrived, lifted the bonnet I recieved an "oh, that's odd" as the mechanic stared at the carb engine
He then spoke to his boss, and both told me they'd happily MOT a carb engined car, manufactured after 1991 with no cat, as a car is completely useless without the precision of the fuel injection system.

Probably doesn't help you much mind ;)
