Its Finally Here!!! (Caterham SLR+ Content)

Post by dlogan » Sun Mar 29, 2009 8:50 pm

I apologise in advance for splurging this....but I am a little excited by it all.

So, I had always planned to return to a 7 after selling the 340R to a very nice chap from Holland.
I felt that my previous car "Dijon" (1.6k Superlight modded to around 170bhp) was a very good example, and thought it would be hard to beat, and was very close to buying it back, but as some have said before, always move forward, not backwards, so I wanted a quicker, higher spec car.

So, Over a month ago the following car came up in response to someone elses wanted ad....and I pounced.

Flew to Heathrow Friday Night, and Saturday morning met Dave Bolton (ex 7 owner), a man with a trailer. He strapped down the car and dropped me at Terminal 5 So I could chill and read books and a bit of shopping while he slogged up to Aberdeen on a 10hr drive. (What a guy....cant thank him enough, and very reasonable price too......if you need a car shifted, get in touch with him).

So at 7pm Saturday night it was in my garage.

So, the basics.
Superlight R
12k miles
Full SLR Spec such as 6spd, LSD, Gold Dry sump, No heater, no wiper motor, no weather gear. All carbon arches, dash etc etc.
Also, Kevlar Tillets, SLR Cage, Mick Barmby Magnesium wheels, Freestyle anti roll bars, adjustable front. Spa digital gauges. Alloy race rad, aces Shift lights. Carbon aero.
BUT.....it also has a 1900Scholar block, R500 Cams, Emerald ECU, Upgraded Pistal Pistons, Arrow Rods, and approx 230bhp.
Corner weighted at 530kgs including the cage and dry sump is very respectable. I havent done the math on the power to weight, but its brisk to say the least, let alone the fact its still being run in as the engine is freshly built.

The car is still filthy, so no photos yet, but here are some pre sale.

The guy I bought it from was incredibly nice, but lacked enthusiasm on the sale as he was forced to sell due to personal reasons, but I was delighted to find he also had a JPE in flouro yellow with flouro wheels. WOW, a stunning car and if you dont know what a Jonathon Palmer Edition Caterham 7 is the give the net a search. Truly exceptional and very much not for sale.

I am a happy bunny.

"I havent done the math on the power to weight"

Aye whatever Dave... :damnfunny

Having seen it today, I would say it looks better in the flesh.
Very cool. 8) 8)

For the record I reckon around 450bhp/t providing it weighs circa 520kg
ZM only has 235 bhp/t :(

That is a nice find indeed ! Seems to have all the right bits by default too. With the clocks going forward and the road salt taking a bow the timing is perfect too.
These rims seem to be very soft. Apparently you can split them yourself when installing new tyres rather than trusting some YTS chump in Kwik Fit.
Has it got one of these devices to stop the oil frothing @ high revs ? Perhaps needs it given the mods but I know relatively nowt

Enjoy, Cal

edited - cos my Mac cannot keep up with my turbo typing and I keep making spelling mistakes

Yeh, the wheels can be split easy enough, and the rims are easy bent / damaged, but thats the beauty as the "rims" are easy replaced leaving the expensive centres in one piece. But they can also crack, but thats another story :)
I think you mean an apollo (air/oil seperator) tank to stop the oil frothing? My old car had one, but its for cars with a wet sump. This one has a dry sump so no extra "tower" for the apollo.

Well done Dave :thumbsup . Top choice. Your beast makes mine look tame :( .

I really look forward to tracking our SLRs together at KH soon.

BTW, what number is it?

Enjoy!

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.
