What should Tom buy?
Thought we might as well start a thread for people to post up options for SE most notorious non Lotus owner to purchase, now he's started charming his lady on his masterplan!

Apples & oranges, innit?
If he's gonna go for 3, then it's purely the money situation. Choice is made for him. 2 would be a good choice for a first time owner if it's an only car and 1 would be my choice (therefore probably the most stupid & financially suicidal, but best fun
)
Resale is an issue, as Tom has said. This points at the 160, as values are already firming up (because it's a valued derivative, nowt to do with the performance attributes)
So, the standard S1, only if money dictates.
Standard S2, better as a first Elise and everyday car.
160 - better for future resale stability (assuming he takes good care of it)
That thin it out a bit more?

yeah - no more pics of that 160 please.... Its had me checking the bank far too regularly!

high mile S1s don't just go bang... there are numerous people running them at 70k+ miles, and some that are committed (or should be!) to 100k+ with no issues. As we know, all Ks go bang with H*F - isn't that still an issue on the S2?
However, that 160 will be one hell of a nightmare as an everyday car with the lumpy idle, even after the 'drivability' package. My fear if I got one would be how quickly I'd run out of talent on the road with it.... my wee 120 bhp car is more than a match for me at the moment!

Rover did changed to steel dowels for in 2001 to reduce the chance of HGF but it still happens, though in S1 or S2 guise it's not really the norm.
I love the S160 but as an everyday car the lumpy idle and poor warm starting would drive me a bit mental.
I'd say either the standard S1 or S2.

I agree, it's not the norm with standard Ks. The dowel thing addressed part of the problem, but I really believe that a standard K with a PRRT would be pretty respectably bombproof in the Elise. Truly believe that's the heart of the problem.The_Rossatron wrote:Rover did changed to steel dowels for in 2001 to reduce the chance of HGF but it still happens, though in S1 or S2 guise it's not really the norm.

From what I'm hearing here (car that other half won't hate, drivable, usable) it's gotta be the S2 (oh god, did I just say that?)
Only reason to pick that S1 (for these particular needs) is if you really couldn't stretch to the S2.
