I've had the 330d one day and would like the 130i back please.
Interesting. Care to elaborate?
Preferred the interior, it's much lighter generally and the broon leather is much nicer than the black in the 330d.

Also, surpringly, the 3.0 N/A petrol straight six is quite a lot nicer than the diesel six. Gearbox is great though.

It'll be a great motorway commuter, but I don't think it'll be much fun ever.

So sell it? Should be fairly easy to sell I think? No point keeping it if you don't like it. Plenty of fish in the sea ...

I've only driven 1 semi-auto - a 2018 Mini Cooper S 7 speed dual clutch thingy.
I have no idea how that particular box is compared to other semi autos, like the VW DSG, but... I had the car for 3 or 4 weeks and managed 800+ miles in it.
As someone who enjoys sporty driving, and coming from a narrow power (torque) band 20018 diesel Alfa owned for 6 years, that I said might as well have been an auto, I expected to get it. I loved the car, but I hated the box.

In normal auto, it was an eco box - always 2 gears above where you wanted, which meant when you put your foot down, it dropped 2 cogs before anything happened - like some sort of modern turbo lag.

In sport auto, it was always a gear or 2 below where you wanted, to people would turn their head as you attracted attention with a loud popping exhaust doing 20mpg around town like a plonker, or you'd be out for a fun drive and it'd unsettle the car mid corner as it shifts up.
I'd describe it as always in the wrong gear.

In manual mode, I just didn't get it. I had to press a button to change gear - it was neither rewarding, or fun. I didn't really see the point of not just leaving it in auto.

On my commute, well, the argument is who cares right? Full auto was fine, it got me to and from work, and I didn't miss a manual - the problem is, I have no issues with driving a manual, and it doesn't really feel like extra effort.
For me, or the Mini (presumable BMW?) box isn't great.

Yesterday I picked up my new daily - a 2016 Mini Cooper S - 6 speed manual
'16 MINI Cooper S - Family fun hatch
'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'07 Fiat Panda 100HP - Daily puddle jumper
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...

I think petrol can be manual and it's zero effort. The older turbo diesels were laggy and had very narrow power bands matched with 6 speed manuals meant you were literally shifting gears all the time - I had one in France to drive along some very nice roads in the south on a family holiday. It was horrid, like no fun at all. But for regular fun driving there aren't many diesels that will fit the bill, I agree!

It's a lovely looking thing. It could pass for new, and the 3 series touring is one of the best looking cars about IMHO*.

Albeit a much derided opinion due to some previous aesthetically challenged car choices

Obviously if I had a more sensible commute I’d be in a v8 or similar. Daft buying a diesel for a 1 mile commute (like a guy I know did and had constant dpf issues as a result)
Came from the BMW 335D X-Drive to the RS4 (minor gap with TT filling the void) and the BMW has the RS4 licked in some ways for day to day living:
- The multimedia system is so much more intuitive and has much nicer features - loved the one touch programming feature on the radio presets
- Obviously the fuel economy. However there is not that much "real world" difference between the 2 cars except when you are pressing on, especially as the RS4 is a high revving V8
- Car is a lot more stealthy and you are not getting hassled for a race each time at the lights (was helped by me de-badging the BMW)

RS4 definitely has it licked in the "feel good" department and ever time Sandra pulls into the drive and I can hear the V8 rumbling away it brings a smile to my face.

If we were to do it again after having the RS4 for 6 months now, Sandra would go to pick up BMW keys instead every time.

Suppose its easiest way to differentiate them is between head/heart.

Our mk2 Octy had a good evolution of the VAG TDI, common rail was main thing I think. Manual box. Real pleasure to own and drive.

Our Mk3 with DSG has an even smoother engine which in Sport mode, revs and pulls remarkably well. For a diesel.

If it were my only car? I might prefer it with a manual box but otherwise it's great. OTOH the DSG box allows 3 distinct modes with Sport sufficiently different to the other 2 that you genuinely feel it's a different setup. Including noise feedback

A Golf GTD is broadly the same car but with more hot hatch DNA. Sorely tempted.

Anyway...I suspect this thread is drifting badly. Sorry team !!

Yeah, probably time for Mike to announce drove it, liked it but time for a change so now sold.

Mike is going to show me his Golf gti soon as i’m thinking about one as replacement for our 320d Touring. I’m assuming he will have the golf for a while longer....

I know what you mean about black leather. I spent months searching for one with oyster or red leather and a decent spec but eventually gave in and bought one with black.
Which is fine but very dull.
No idea why so many people stick to black when ordering new when lighter/brighter colours don’t cost anything.

Indeed. I very much want an i3 at the moment.
If I had an i3 for the daily grind I’d agree with Ross and exchange the diesel for a petrol in the family wagon.
