Flicked through this months EVO and spotted an article highlighting new EU legislation due Nov 2012 that will effectively end the production of road legal track tyres such as Toyo 888 etc. 48's weren't mentioned but presume they are on the list as well. More rules and legislation...........smashin

So R spec tyres are killers (not diirected at Paul)??? Will we every make people responsible for their own actions?
It is a balance - more grip in the dry vs less in the wet/cold! I drove in the snow on R888's and I am still alive (touches wood).

When you look at just how slick an A048 is I have always thought it pretty amazing they are legal, and several non-car enthusiast friends have expressed the same view when they have noticed them on my Exige. That said, this really is just a load of nanny state nonsense - what next, ban all cars over a certain power, make traction control mandatory? Surely hardly anyone is daft enough to buy a car on semi slicks and then drive it anything other than gingerly on a wet road. For me a large part of the unique feel and appeal of the Exige comes from the tyres. An Exige on normal road tyres is just not the real deal at all

My wife works for the European Commission, and after reading the start of this thread I had the usual 'look what your banning now' argument.

However, if you actually read the proposal, you will find that they are only asking that tyres are rated on the basis of wet weather grip, road noise etc, and a label attached so the consumers can understand what they are buying. It will not really effect the purchasers of 48's or 888's, as they know what they are buying in the first place.

No tyres are betting banned, regardless of what the red tops / press say.

My car on 48's or 888's is pretty good on the road in the wet, as long as there is plenty of tread on the tyre.

Below 2mm I am a pussy.

They did mention that under the same ruling thtey would be getting rid of those piss poor £10 tyres that prob kill more ppls than the 888 type tyre.

Was it Fifth gear that did a road test on remoulds etc for stopping distances ?

Don't know which show that was on, (sounds like a 5th gear sort of thing), but do know that remoulds / cheap tyres can lack any grip. The 'Goodrides' we had on the TSE beemer had no grip, but never wore out! Fun for an autotest, but a scary prospect for road use.
