I had a 2.0 HDi Dturbo for about 5 months, before my elise. For a frenchie, (in the 5 months I had it) it was most relaible. It liked a drink. I had bought a diesel with a view to getting some economy, but as soon as you went near the turbo (required unless you were happy to not only sound like a tractor, but move at the same speed as one), it enjoyed a good drink.
Did quite like it though. Did not have it long enough to get intimate with it's problems.
Dom.

Reason that I asked is that Lukes 17th is coming up, and the kids have always had their provisional licence and driving lessons for their birthday. A friend of Ian's at work is selling his Peugeot 206 XSI 2002, black, 81,000 miles he has had it for the past five years with one owner before that, full service history, lovely condition.
I can get it for £2.5K, and looking through Pistonheads and Autotrader they seem to be going for £3-£4K which seems high. Insurance in Verian's name with Luke as a named driver is £480, so not too bad.
However this kind of car is not my line, so always worth asking if it is worth going for.

We had a couple of 206's tut, never had any problems with them. Cheap to run, when they need bits the main dealers are not too bad and Euro car parts stock 99% of the bits both OEM or pattern.
Once he gets used to it he can have my 306 gti-6, hey someone might as well get the use out of it!!!

I've always wondered about the reliability of the electrical systems in the 206 - Every time I drive any distance on the motorway, I usually spot at least one 206 with the brake lights jammed on...
That said, if it's a two owner car, with a known history, it should be a decent bet...
Is he set on a 206?
Youngsters seem to like the Punto Sporting - A 2004 car, with lower mileage seems achievable for £2.5k

And this car in Dundee seems surprisingly cheap, for a TDi Golf...

Nice starter car for the boy.
Had a 2.0 GTi Y-reg from new (& a 205 before that) when I was younger. It was a good car for me in the 4 years I had it. Handling wise, it was typical small hot hatch stuff but didn't do the lift-off oversteer of the 205.
They revised them in 2001 & i think the pre-2001 cars interiors were a bit more flimsy.
Is the XSi the 1.6 Ltr version. (I think older ones were 1.4Ltr)
Only two problems I had with it were the exhaust which cracked & needed replacing and the brakes weren't up to the job of a GTi; it used to destroy breakpads at an alarming rate. I had a couple of sets of front pads crack & delaminate from there backers & once disintegrated altogether from overheating

. I should've uprated the brakes but I had a readily available supply of OEM pads FOC from my Dad's garage.
cheers
Alex

Not necessarily a 206 Ross, just a sporty looking three door hatch, and he likes black. This one is Group 8 so would not want to go above that. Insurance for 17 year old boys is horrendous, not helped by my other son.
