New 5 series revealed

Post by ryallm » Tue Nov 24, 2009 5:18 pm

Will probably be criticised for being bland or looking like a big E90 3 series but I like it a lot. A return to BMW producing classically elegant big saloons after the styling excesses of the Bangle era and the spectacularly pointless X6.

Have you been on the magic mushrooms Mark? Take the grille away and it could be anything.

Afraid it just looks large and style less to me.

The E39 was BMW's finest hour for me and still looks fresh 13 years on.

I think BMW in general have lost the plot a bit in recent years. Ugly, pointless niche models aside they seem to be drifting away from the simple 'ultimate driving machine' philosophy, upon which their whole reputation was built.

I quite like it.

Faintly worried about the mention of Electric steering though.

Q: What was the last interesting German car you saw ?

RS4 ?
TTRS ?
R8 ?
AMG E63 Merc ?
SLR Merc ?

Not really sure I can think of one - perhaps a Wiessman ?

Too conservative - too dull....

Oh well, predicably I am in the minority on this one :D Tricky one for BMW. They alienated a large proportion of their traditional customers with all the whacky Bangle designed cars, now they produce something a bit more conservative and they get panned for blandness. Still, looks nicely proportioned and much better than an E class, Jag XF, Audi A6 etc to my eyes. I'll have one fettled by Alpina for Xmas please, preferably a touring 8)

Agree, except I can't recall seeing one (I'm warming to the Veyron presence), but 911s don't push any buttons for me.

Perhaps I should clarify that I mean interesting to look at. Agree that some of the cars mentioned are probably great to drive.

911's are dullsville, I don't think I wouldn't do the porsche thing even will a lottery win.

Looks wise and personally the Jag XF does it for me and I havn't liked a 5 series since they had a shark nose. Don't get me wrong if I was in the market then I would have to drive them all but the new one is as ugly as the previous one.

The Z4 is pretty though, the guy across the hall has one and it's his only redeeming feature.

The Veyron is why germans don't do racing
