I've got the 330d Sport. E46 model - 2003 facelift one
Standard its 204bhp - 6sp manual.
great car.
Its now been remapped to 250bhp with 366lb ft torque.
It gets 38mpg (driving quite hard) and 48mpg on a long run.
Before remap - 50 to 80 mph in 5th took 9.1 secs
After remap - 50 to 80 to 7.3 secs.......
I reckon mid range (ie 50+) - it is quicker than what my Lotus was (120bhp sports tourer)
So - i would go for the 6 cyl ones (325/330 or 525 530)

48mpg on a long run sounds good for the 330d.
I like the look of the 525M but think it's just the bodykit and harder suspension over and above the standard. Not worth the premium but looks far better than the standard.
Where did you get the remap / cost?
Cheers

Don't count on that! I've also got a 330d 204bhp and I get 37-40mpg out of a tank, no matter how it's driven. My commute is 25 miles all motorway outside of peak hours and even if I do a full tank only going to and from work, I never get more than 40mpg.
Great car though, for the proper BMW experience it has to be a six cylinder. The 4 cylinders sound like diesels, the 6 cylinders don't (from inside the car anyway!). They even sound good when ragging it!

Sorry, Stevo - The 38mpg is driving quite hard
the 48mpg is sitting at 56mph on the motorway & not accelorating over 2000rpm....
(I tried this out on a full tank to see what it could get)
Where as cruising at 85mph on the Motorway, you will get about 38 too....

yep there is no way you can get near the BMW quoted mpg's. My 123d does about 40mpg average although it does look like it sticks between 40.3 and 40.9mpg.
As soon as its possible I put on the cruise control tho so maybe that has a bit of a bearing on my mpg.
