Looking for a 37" tv for one of the rooms. Can't decide on LCD or Plasma. Budget is around £400. Will mostly be watching sports, a few dvd's and a little PS3 but, as I'm used to a bigger Plasma in our main room, I'm hesitating to go the LCD route with stories from bygone days of motion blur etc. LCD route gives me more options at a better price so thats why I'm asking if any of you have gone LCD route for this type of viewing and if so whats your thoughts?

No real issues with LCD motion blur etc any more, unless you buy a Chavsda special.

If in doubt - blag some of John Lewis' time and get demos of stuff on the sets you like.

I still much prefer the picture you get on a plasma TV. I could go into all the little things that clinch it for me but people might die of boredom, suffice to say it's just nicer IMO.

Indeed, can't disagree, but flipside being power consumption etc -very much the thing to do is get some good demos - your eyes are the judge. Some of Samsung's current LCD panels are just gorgeous.

There shouldn't be issues with a decent quality LCD. Will probably be more than your £400 budget but I would go for LED if you can spend more - much brighter picture. We went to get a new LCD and decided to delay purchase for a while and go LED when price drops a bit.

Agree about demos. A friend recently bought an LED tv and it's something to behold, not cheap mind.

I've got a 42" Plasma in the main room and its excellent but the other room is much smaller hence the need for a smaller set. I saw a 42" LG Plasma yesterday in Comet reduced to £399. Razor surround etc, stunning tv and great price. With the razor surround its a good few inches smaller in overall size than my 42" Panasonic but I'm kind of worried about viewing distances in the smaller room. In this bedsit room the max we'll be away from the screen will be around 11ft and sometimes much nearer and I wonder if a 42" in that confined space will be too much, i.e., picture not great as we're sitting too close. Was a lovely set mind.

Hence me dropping back to look at 37" sets. Annoys me that I'm paying as much if not more for a smaller set too!

The LCD tv's I was looking at were the LG37LH3000 or the older model LG37LF2510, which I can still find online at just shy of £400. The 42" Plasma is the LG42PJ350 at £399. I know what one I want, the 42", but I'm afraid re the viewing distances.

Whats it like on the sports viewing? Watched aome football on a friends 32" Samsung on Sunday night, an 4 years old set admittedly, and it was awful. Jarred image, blur on movement etc. You have any probs?

Like the set mind you. And the price!

Some freeview channels are properly shocking.

Never had any issues watching football, rugby or the F1 on it (all through SKY however) and I do sit a decent distance away from it (like you are supposed too ).

Hell yea, though I had made a major purchase mistake with mine freeview can look crappy, bluray/ps3/xbox all look stunning though

It was that charity footy mach, I think it was ITV4. Source was arial via freeview box. Agreed though, some channels are poor. I watch the Real Madrid channel now and then and you'd think sometimes you were watching a 3d movie without the glasses. Definition is awful.

My new one will likely be arial feed only.

What about the viewing distance issue? Do you think 8 to 10 feet is too close for that 42" plasma?

No way, I'm only 10-12' from my screen and that's 100", I've a 32" for TV/non-HD programmes, it's like watching the telly thru' a letterbox
