Anyone else upgraded their OS ? I upgraded my 3g tonight and appear to have lost all my application data and am trawling to find out how to recover it or downgrade.

Anyone else hit this ?

It should have backed you phone up then gave you the option to restore from last back up. There may be a way to do this manually which will allow you to restore from the last back up it made.

Just to make you feel better Sanjoy, your 3G will run rediculously slow once you have eventually got all of your apps back.

Absolute joke of a software upgrade, the 3G obvioulsy isn't fast enough to handle it and everything takes an age to do anything

There is a way to downgrade to OS3.whatever but it's not an official apple thing.

Try this if you want to downgrade;
clicky
I haven't done it myself so take no responsibility if it doesn't work!

Not read great things about it, my 4 runs perfectly, and has the bumper, so I am going to avoid upgrading!

it is a total joke.

I was wondering whether I just had too many things on mine, but it delays even entering the pin number.

apple really are a bunch of f***wits.

Dave, it's just the 3G that has problems I think, 3GS and 4 can run the new OS fine but the 3G is too slow to handle it :(

I think that's just the line that Apple want you to believe - purposefully bloating the OS so that the older model feels so shoddy next to the newer one, to make you want to upgrade.

It's not like apple have purposefully been writing the windoze version of iTunes to be a total turd for years, to show how "awesome" macs are in comparison, is it....?

Love my iPhone, hate Apple policy.

The cynic in me says that you upgrade your iPhone 3 to the latest OS, it runs too slow and you, err, buy an iPhone 4 ... suckers.

It's hard to imagine how an OS can slow your TELEPHONE to the point where it doesn't work acceptably; of course the iPhone4 hardware has already made sure that your Nintendo DS (sorry iPhone 4) doesn't work as a telephone unless you hold it just so ... cheap at £500 ;-)

Sooner or later people will learn that buying locked in hardware/software solutions is a mistake that can only lead to you getting shafted, eventually.

Cheers,
Robin

Same here. iOS4 has strangled Su's iPhone 3G. If you have a 3G on iOS3, keep it on iOS3 (at least for now).

My 4 went back to Vodafone and contract cancelled. Superb device and a painful retro step going back to a 3, but infuriating telephone when not in strongest signal areas :( Not for the grip o'death problem but for the fundamental inability to reliably hold signal when sat on my desk at home let alone pocketing or palming attenuation - when every other Vodafone SIM'd handset is 24/7 useable. I tried 3 handsets then gave up and dealt with a reasonable store manager.

Agree with both of you. I didn't for one minute think "my 3g has suddenly become sh*t, and I need to rush out and buy a 4", I just got annoyed that they chose to let 3G users upgrade firmware which actually gives very little benefit (application folders is the only real one) and makes it run slowly.
The decision was taken to not let original iPhone users upgrade to oS4, so you've got to ask why they decided the 3G could handle it when it clearly can't- and it's very hard not to take the cynics viewpoint :(

I've done this, worked well. using legit apple software to install OS, and then a wee app called RecBoot at the end.

However, I only see this is a temporary fix, as how long is it going to be before the apps become iOS 4 only?....therefore no updates to any existing apps.

2am job. Ended up using Windows7 feature to restore the backup folder to one earlier in the week I had took and then reapplying this to the phone. Took and age and several attempts but worked.

More than a phone to me Robin use it as a smart device so the phone element really is <25% for me.

Speed issues not hit me so far yet as my phone was running like a dawg anyways so thought I would take the plunge. Upgraded Sarah's phone last week fairly glitch free although still took about 2 hours!

Remember when Iphones were really quick ?

If it's even more important than you than just a telephone, all the more reason not to get tied into Apple's one-shop-like-it-or-fcuk-off solution.

Cheers,
Robin
