In this era of cost cutting, thats the first thing regarding winter driving I would get rid off.....what a waste of cash a gritter is running around wasting salt at the wrong time of year..when the real winter kicks in we're buggered..gasgas wrote:Got stuck behind a bloody gritter tonight, anyone else spotted them yet?
Know what you mean but i think this comes down to risk avoidance. Council are getting hassle (possibly sued) from drivers when they hit a patch of ice , in councils best interest to ensure roads are treated these days , less risky to do it. Work with a company that tracks gritting vehicle to prove which roads have been treated including location and the quantity delivered IIRC. Allows products users i.e councils to deny liability easily when a claim is made.Noops wrote:In this era of cost cutting, thats the first thing regarding winter driving I would get rid off.....what a waste of cash a gritter is running around wasting salt at the wrong time of year..when the real winter kicks in we're buggered..gasgas wrote:Got stuck behind a bloody gritter tonight, anyone else spotted them yet?![]()
Bit harsh if you hit black ice with no warning? 5mph is too fast to control on that...Ferg wrote:That people can claim at all is disgraceful! Surely it comes under driving wihtout due care and attention ie. "too fast for road conditions"
What you goin up there for? best be careful can be a little rough with outsiders. Remember the appropriate repsonse to " Foos yer doos?" is " pechin awa" and you will be fineMike Scib wrote:Yep, out in East Kilbride. Should be a fun drive to Buckie at 5am!

Fair point. reading back I implied the driver was at fault which is incorrect. I suppose I meant I was suprised at the legal liability of the coucil.Shug wrote:Bit harsh if you hit black ice with no warning? 5mph is too fast to control on that...Ferg wrote:That people can claim at all is disgraceful! Agree people piling on in horrendous conditions is an issue, but there's another view in that the road should be at least treated where necessary to be as safe as possible.
If you fall over on a pavement in the ice you can sue but not if driving on the road. A few years ago the milk tanker went through the bridge on the crow road (2001), they had not gritted the road for 1 week despite their obligation to grit if conditions do not increase above 0degrees by mid day (stupid anyway since it's a busy commuter road). Aslo stupid because the temp readings were in central stirlig and not the top of the Campsies. Council had to grit the road for health and safety to allow 4 stirling council employees to assess the damage. The road was sheet ice yet the blame was placed on the tanker driver. 2010 and the "temporary" concrete barriers are still in place. Seems the lives of 4 council workers are more important than the hundeds of commuters who use that road daily, more since the cumbernauld road works on the m80. Last year the council backed down and agreed to grit the road after a 10year battle, however they pittyful amount they use is barely worth the effort. The east Dunbartonshire side is black and ice free right upto the stirling boundary which can be white with snow with a few grains of grit.Ferg wrote:Fair point. reading back I implied the driver was at fault which is incorrect.
