I don't understand how a watch costs £500 let alone £5k.

My Swatch cost £40 and tells the time and date accuratly and without the need for a £200 service each year. I do not need a stopwatch as my life isn't exciting enough to need to know anything that accurate. +/- 5 mins is close enough most of the time.

My pragmatic (and facking skint) side agrees with you. But if I had enough money that a 6K watch would not be either here nor there (especially given it's investment qualities) then I'd have one.

It's just engineering porn. They are masterpieces of human ingenuity - they get bought for that reason (and as a vulgar display of money, for a staggeringly annoying amount of people) A good battery quartz watch will actually be slightly more accurate over an extended period but that's got nothing to do with it - it's a mechanical thing and because of that, it's got inherent beauty....

But I'd not go without petrol to have one.....

Sadly, his £40 quartz swatch is likely to be infinatesimally more accurate over an extended period - but that's hardly the point...

Hmm, I suppost your right, but I'm still not paying more than £50 for my next watch!

£5k will keep me and her in holidays for 10 years!
(Or her buying new clothes for about 3 weeks  )

get the funky chrome & orange Lotus watch - it's about £500 or so I think.

Looks like a disc and caliper (well it does to me)

I think the Lotus watch is only about £175. That must be the fish & chips out of a newspaper to some of the fillet mignon brigade here

Gareth

I bought an Oris BC3 a couple of months ago, I think it looks great and it was a bit less than £500, see here 40mm one with the rubber strap.
http://www.oris.ch/english/index.html

Select Avaition, then BC3.

As several have already said, I think a battery quartz for £50 would probably be more accurate, but I like the mechanical, beautifully engineered stuff.

If your looking for Hollywood endorsement, Nicholas Cage wears one in Eight Millimeter, not a good reason to buy one, but sure beats any James Bond film for the disturbing factor.

If all you want is a watch to tell the time, take Simon's argos recommendation, if you want a car to get from A to B buy a Toyota Yaris, life isn't supposed to be dull.

Shoomer - I loved your watch when I saw it - not ashamed to admit I went home and tried to see if I could get hold of one via t'internet! No joy though :(

Gareth, most watch specialists will tell you that the best watch ever made is a Roley - no getting away from it! As for the Speedmaster - glad to see you're individual enough to step away from the Seamaster, i think its a hurrendous looking thing! Still, you pays your money, you takes your choice :)

Speedmaster is a v. sexy watch, but not sure about the model you've picked - I prefer the silver faced ones :) First watch to get on the moon aswell you know... (totally trivia-tastic :) )

BTW, I guess that 20 inch Breil monster has finally packed up? (or have your wrists got tired of lugging it around :P )

oh yeah - and when buying, get them to throw in free servicing while you're at it! Mine needs to go in for a 5year service, and it'll set me back 220 notes....
