Put my winters on the BMW yesterday too.

First winter with the new car and it didn't go exactly according to plan.

Bought a spare set of standard rims (hardly any other rims fit the 1er so it was the easiest way to go).

Ordered tyres from my trusted tyre shop about a month ago and went to get them fitted on Wednesday.
Owner decided he wasn't going to fit them because I had gone for 225s all round instead of 245s on the back.

Told me it'd cause all sorts of bother with sensors etc- wouldn't listen when I said that you can get different trim levels which have the same engine and box with those tyres on.....

So had to go elsewhere to get them fitted, went to a local alloy refurbishment place thinking they'd be extra careful with my pristine-not-a-single-scratch-on-them alloys.

I now have a huge scratch round the rim from the crowbar thing they use.

Not happy would be an understatement. They'll fix it for free but then there's the problem of them potentially not matching the colour correctly. Bloody hassle!

I always have winter tyres fitted to my shed (VW mk4 estate tdi 130 - best car ever?). I'm up in the highlands a lot and a fwd car on winters will cope better than most suv's on their 19's... Incredible difference to water shedding, lateral grip and braking. Well worth it.

I'll second that I run 2 FWD A4 avants and have no problem on winters. On the summer tyres I couldn't get any traction at all.
Just swapped the wife's car for a yeti and went for the 2wd with winters rather than 4wd given the good experience with the A4.

Put the new nokian winterproof all weathers on Mrs leon today which is good timing. Good reviews in snow and wet roads so ideal for here.

I have never used Winter tyres but have now decided to fit them. Have not been out in the car since the snow came, but to be honest the problem initially would be getting down the drive never mind up.

It is like a sheet of wet ice and I have visions of no control at all and going down like a sledge. These look like a good bet, I have seen the Nankangs mentioned and these include delivery, fitting and balancing by my local tyre shop in Keith. Would it be a good bet to go ahead with these?

These Nokian ones get a great write up.

You should be able to get a set of alloys and decent tyres (Nokian or Vredestein) for about £100 a corner here - http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/car-wheels.html

Vred here as well, run quadtracs on the van and wintracs for years nowt I did try good years and nankangs previously but the vreds are very good. Not tried he Michelin equivalents yet but supposed to be good also.

Norman at tyre devotion used to stock vreds, he comes to you.

tut if its for the crv it might be worth a proper 4x4 tyre. We run Geolander a/t's on a work freelander that has been amazing in the snow last few years and run fine elsewhere in summer too

Went out on a run with a few friends today, I was the only one with winters on and the only one not to struggle for grip at all.
