I have been fancying a scooby for a while, an itch that needs scratched. I have talked a dealer into taking the Audi shed off my hands and selling me a 2004 WRX for an agreeable price.

Tell me why this is a very bad idea.

Depends on what economy you expect!

If it's for commuting and town driving then you'll not get much in the way of mpg.

Ask Andy how much use his Scooby shed is getting?

As long as you can deal with teens fuel economy, why not?

Fuel isn't unexpected, funnily enough the idea was prompted by the shocking fuel on the Audi which is not far off Scoob levels which led to thoughts of "might as well have a scooby". Insurance isnt proving to be very cheap however

Bits aren't cheap, either...Unless parts prices have changed, I remember paying the thick end of £400 to have two rear wheel bearings changed on mine.

Brakes were cack, and prone to warping (later WRX's are supposed to be better, though), and they seem pretty sensitive to the need for proper servicing & maintenance.

I borrowed my dad's for a run up north this week, my first time driving a Scooby for more than a few minutes. Trip was a mix of A9 slog and my favourite fast-blast roads.

Notes:

Effortlessly quick in all gears. Warp-speed overtaking. Needs a careful right foot even in 5th. I guess you get used to it if you own one.

Too much grip to make it interesting (even on snow tyres). There's no doubt you'll make it round every corner you go into at any speed you could stop at. In other words, capable as hell, but no fun whatsoever. Covers ground at license-loosing speeds with very little driver involvement. It's really only good for going fast, and I tend to think that a slower car driven harder is much more satisfying on Her Maj's highways.

Stupidly thirsty for a daily motor, and only drinks V-Power. 25mpg on a run, less if you use it. Small tank means £60 in every 250 miles max. F*ck that.

Steering wheel is comically big (a pet hate of mine). Interior quality is garbage. Seat is huggy, but firm. Lots of noise. Horrible place to be, really.

Very reliable if serviced well.

I've really fancied one for a while (thinking quick, practical, capable, load-lugging, trackable all-rounder), but I think I've gone off the idea this week. I can see why make awesome rally cars, but I can't see what use they are for anything else.

Even still, I'll probably scratch the itch too, some day. Gotta be done, innit?

Nothing so far thats really talking me out of it, I know it's going to be more expensive to run. Even if I only have it for a year it will have scratched the itch.

Not looking for a hugely entertained road car, already got one, just want some a wee bit more interesting to keep the miles off the Exige.

Considered one recently but decided against it for the following reasons:

Very sh*t mpg
Expensive insurance
Expensive servicing
Crap plasticy dated interior
No toys


I do still have the itch and like the idea of one but just can't see me ever buying one now. I'm convinced I'd regret it within a month or two (doing 1,500 miles + per month just now). Was actually bit disappointed with them tbh and that made me sad

Mate of mine had a 'blob eye' prodrive effort, hugely fast but it seemed to eat consumables in no time.

Standard suspension didn't last either.

Hugely quick - Tupperware interior.

i was considering a non turbo one as a shed but how hardy are they as i live a couple of miles along a farm track and the concept of slow down for the bumpy bits just hasn't sunk in yet so i have decided my next shed must have basically full rally suspension.

The landrover copes with 50mph along a field a ford focus doesn't

i quite like our winter shed, although its actually proved to be most popular for lending to friends!

Fuel consumption is sh*t, but its well built, reliable, and rapid.

I like my 98 one as it has the bonnet scoop from the Macrae era. Also despite its age everything is still tight, no slack in the steering etc. But mine is from the era of the suprisingly rapid farmers cars, which were SO robust.
