What's your favourite Scottish road?

Post by C7Steve » Sun Mar 13, 2011 12:25 pm

I have just been thinking how it will soon be time to getting out in the car again.
(Once the snows away and the weather is warmer)
I am looking forward to driving on my favourite roads, and experiencing new ones too.
It occurred to me that i should create a new topic to see if any new roads have been found, and to see if any of your favourite ones have not been forgotten by us all here at SE.

My favourite run is still from Aberdeen to Aviemore, via Alford and Tomintoul. :D

Only ever done the Quaich road once many years ago, with Campbell I think, so time for a repeat.

Borders - so many of them, but some real "giant scaletrix" track stuff down int he area surrounding St Marys loch and head for Newcastleton. Not ideal for anything bigger than an Elise, although the St Marys loch road was epic in the 430.

Hawick to Carter Bar is fun also, the Gattonside bumps (get off the ground 7 times in under a mile) is infamous for helping to get pregnant ladies in to labour. :thumbsup

Love the roads around Applecross also, but too rough and tight for the Ferrari last time we did it.

Just to get out in the R400 FINALLY today was magic, albeit a run to the petrol station and back, via the bypass to evaluate higher speed handling post Ring Nov trip.

Just cant wait for Frolic :thumbsup

Glenshee -Perth, followed by the lecht, run to applecross is picturesque but there's better roads IMO.

kinlochleven loop whilst trying to chase Craig but failing miserably and just seeing him disappear into the distance, then getting the TT airborne whilst trying to catch up!

Can anyone suggest a road that has an intact surface? All my favorite local routes have suffered this winter. :(

I fully agree with that.
I've driven it three year ago. We took the loop via Stoer - Nedd. Prepare for short but very steep parts!
The road is marked " Not allowed for Coasters " where it starts. Indeed, they will get stuck.

I've planned a short break first week of May and hope to drive this road again.

Many favourites for different reasons, top 3 would be :

A890 - Achnasheen to Strathcarron - especially the first 10 miles long sweeping bends, stunning views little traffic
A832 - especially along the shores of Loch Maree
B9704?? - The Struie Hill from Alness to Ardgay - Often done this early in the morning heading for the Orkney Ferry, good mix of twisty and fast

Now, I need to plan a route to thread all this together.......

Ian
