One of the reasons I set this up ( other than to learn how to create a forum) was that I would visit your yahoo group more oftehn if it was forum based. Yahoo groups have their benefits but drive me nuts !
Let me know what you think of this forum idea please

As I answered on Yahoo, there's been a huge amount of chat about a forum. I've been in favour of one for ages. But there's a problem...
The majority of the group have got used to the mail format - lots of people only read the emails, never visit the yahoo site. This is especially relevant for people who get the emails at work, etc.
Graeme Fraser was trying a forum with linked digest email posts, but it was horribly flaky, so never got past the testing stage.
You might get a wee hardcore of drivelers (like me) who sign up here and use it for more off-topic stuff, but the main things will still go on Yahoo, I think.

Totally agree.Cal wrote:No probs Malcom
If this dies a grizzly death then no-one will be concerned. It makes it a hell of a lot easier to search for threads, host, post, vote, share, express blab blah
Nothing ventured, nothing gained
A good search feature can be invaluable.
Also, have a look at the Club Gti forum, via http://www.clubgti.com (I think). They have sticky topics for faqs, info on engine swaps etc.

Think you can do that here but I get ur point. Long term tho?? If you look at successful forums across the web then php wins.Shug wrote:...The majority of the group have got used to the mail format - lots of people only read the emails, never visit the yahoo site. Scott - S_E has been going since 98. The strength of it is that the members don't *just* chat on a forum - the majority of S_E members attend events, runs and meets.
Contrast that with SELOC and the like - they proudly boast their member numbers, but how many are active?

I like the format of the forum and obviously it can be tweaked and added to if therewas a demand. As I view all internet stuff online, including mail, then the main feature of the Yahoo SE site that it supports mailing of posts to members dosn't interest me at all. However it is apparantly something that is used a lot. I stopped using it when I spent so much time download messages and crap filling up my mail box, plus plenty viruses.
Far prefer the more orgainsed format of this sort of Forum with split into sections and threads within them. Far easier to search this sort of forum for information such as FAQs ect.
Hopefully some folk will give it a go. Added to my bookmarks so will visit to see how things go.

Yeah, I've always viewed S_E online. Probably part of the reason that I'm guilty of drivel... Try to keep it to a minimum these days though.
There's still this knot of people who WILL NOT convert to a forum, despite conveniences like 'today's posts' and flat rate internet. It's a problem, but hopefully this forum will take some of the drivel load off the Yahoo group and leave it for events and technical help, which can be cross posted here.

But still, your missing the most important point ever, you can't put a wee picture of ur car on S_E

I have no problem with the S_E format, but that is with receiving e-mails, as opposed to browsing on Yahoo Groups, which is effing horrible. Of course I am retired and can read most of it live as opposed to catching up.
I suppose uniquely, the fact that I can keep all the postings was a main benefit as well, as I find them useful for reference. My S_E file now runs to 75,432 postings(lost a few along the way), and my Sent Items is over 16,000.
Well it beats butterfly collecting..........
