Domain Names and Hosting etc.
Domain Names and Hosting etc.
Right... so now I'm moving away from Plusnet... I reckon I might get myself a wee Domain of my own ... that way I can swap ISPs whenever I fancy and not have to worry about shifting my crap that I've stored online too.
It seems I cant just register a domain name and point it to the free webspace you get with most ISPs... so just wondering if anyone knows the best value company to use to get a domain name and 1-2gb of storage.
Cheers and thanking you.

You can definitely just register a domain and point it to free web space from your ISP. Try http://www.123-reg.co.uk or http://www.1and1.co.uk. You can use the control panel for your domain to forward to another URL where you have your ISP hosting. You can also mask the URL so that your domain remains in the address bar.

Easily may not be the cheapest £10 for a .co.uk for 2 years but they are very good.
Can i recommend some of the following;
http://www.stripesarentgay.co.uk
http://www.isuckforcash.co.uk
etc etc

The Zen site (For 8Mbps Active - http://www.zenbroadband.com/athome.aspx?page=455) says you get 1GB of web space. As long as this space is visible on the internet (probably something like http://www.zen.co.uk/~ddtb/) then you can direct a domain name to that. Zen have nothing to do with that bit.DDtB wrote:Yup that's what I wanted to do.... but having just spoken to Zen, they class the space they give you as "user space" not "web space" and do not allow you to point to it, even if you host your domain name with them....

According to Zen, their servers are setup to specifically stop this. you can only link to your user site if you have another hosted site re-directing. You cant just do it with a domain name re-direct only.ironside wrote: The Zen site (For 8Mbps Active - http://www.zenbroadband.com/athome.aspx?page=455) says you get 1GB of web space. hmmm.....
Bet you can. I think they are talking about if you redirect it to zen's customer web server IP it will not work, which is correct. But a redirect or a 100% frame will work just fine. What's your customer space address? We can test it first.DDtB wrote: According to Zen, their servers are setup to specifically stop this. you can only link to your user site if you have another hosted site re-directing. Ok, found some random zen customer's site instead.
His original site is here: http://www.zen77990.zen.co.uk/
Redirection method 1: http://www.scottishelises.com/ddtb1/
Redirection method 2: http://www.scottishelises.com/ddtb2/
Both work fine.
Cheers,
