Ring Death

Just reading on the Save The Ring page that a 35 yr old male passenger from UK was thrown from a Renault Clio today and sustained fatal injuries
German police have issued a statement that he was in rear seat and may not have been wearing a belt
Very sad

As much as I love the spirit of the ring, if they want to safeguard it's future then surely they have to start insisting on seatbelts, helmets and no rear passengers.

Very sad, but very stupid to get in a car and not wear a seatbelt on normal roads, never mind round the 'ring.

An 18-25 year old would have been sad but not surprising (male immortality syndrome) but a 35 years old!? There is bound to be more to it than meets the eye. In any case a tragedy. For me the ring is already doomed in public day format and track days are the only way it will continue - whether it can make enough money from track days, industry days and race events I don't know ... I would guess it can though.

Best not to assume.
The only suprise in someways is that it wasnt a biker. (not having a go at the biking crew)

I think it's more that the bike deaths just go unreported now, due to quantity - last stat I heard was one a week (dying trackside, the ones that die once they've left in a helicopter don't go onto the stats). The place is clearly not to be played with - which is something the Top Gear idiots should have thought of before really blowing it's popularity out of the water (I know, it's not just them, but they are a major factor)

Exactly. So far all thats known is the rear passenger was thrown clear of the car and was killed.
The published police report doesn't mention seat belts. He may have been wearing one and come out for various reasons, especially if it was loosly fitted and/or the seat broke.
Very sad.
Not sure if correct, but I've seen it said this was the first fatality from a car since 2005 (?), if so it makes the ring look positively safe compared to the record of the surrounding public roads in the Eifel...

Shug, for sure its nothing like 1/week, by any measure. Whatever reports might come from the Ring GmbH (or not, they don't seem to provide much information to Joe Public) the local police pretty much tell it like it is without regard for things like victims surviving long enough to leave the circuit, the Clio incident here;
