Whacked It

Post by 111Robin » Sat Aug 19, 2006 5:53 pm

Just exited the Broxburn roundabout (Perth) heading south, was on the straight, accelerated, back end came right round, hit a car in the inside lane, spun onto the grass verge. Road was wet and there may have been deisel (could smell it). Drove straight to MMC and left it there (rad burst but stopped to fill the header tank twice so didn't overheat). No one was hurt thankfully (the other car hit the central barrier and spun) but I was shocked how quickly the back end went without any warning. All damage is to the front end, could have been a lot worse I guess, lesson learned.

Sorry to hear that

Did you call the Old Bill? Report deisel spill... for insurance purposes?

Called the cops, they actually said that they'd had a spate of similar incidents around the area but didn't say anyhting about the diesel in particular. To be honest I was too shaken to mention it to them anyway. Does anyone have any comments to make about MMC (Edbro) and accident repair ?. It's just that given the amount of posts on poor quality from them in some cases I did wonder but as I wanted to take it somewhere immediately I didn't think twice.

MMC won't repair it, it'll go to a bodyshop such as JM Perth. If you can avoid it going there, I would.

What's the next best alternative for the repair ?. Seeing as I've left it at MMC (and the rad's bust), taking it elsewhre would be a pain (unless transported ofcourse, which I guess insurance would cover).

Possibly Wallyford who are part of JM too but I've heard mixed reports about them too. TBH, you'll hear good and bad about anywhere so it's a bit of a lottery unfortunately.

Guess you're right. Think I'll just leave it to MMC. Anyone else had front clam replaced by MMC ?. How long is it likely to take (crash srtructure assumed to be damaged also, windscreen cracked, radiator burst). Nothing wrong with suspension, still drove true, no wheel damage so only impact to the front of the clam. I'd post a pic if I knew how.

Hi

I assume it drove straight with the steering wheel still central? I also assume you want to fix this through your insurers, seeing as how you've damaged a 3rd party and so have to pay anyway?

I don't believe you'll get a particularly good spray job out of JM wallyford (has anyone had a really good job done there?).

If your insurance will go through Steve Walker's bodyshop in bathgate (and assuming they can take this work on) you could consider that - though I have never been there personally I know of several that have had good experiences with him. You would need to get the mechanicals if any fixed at MMC first - clam off, radiator (and perhaps crash structure) replacement, then trailer the car over to the bodyshop to do the rest - it's a bit different than the normal route but hopefully you'll end up with a better result.

Cheers,
Robin

Sounds like a lot of hassle Robin. It sucks that you can't rest assured that taking your car to the dealer will mean the quality of workmanship will be spot on. I guess if it isn't good enough I can just put the insurance company on to them to rectify it as they're paying for it.

(posted pics again as I screwed around with the web location)

Just seen Scottd's post about his car just back from JM PErth after new clam. His underbody damage sustained while at JM PErth is ridiculous. If that happens to my car I'll go mental. I had a look underneath when I left it at MMC, no underside damage whatsoever but I didn't take any pic's. Nervous now about leaving it up to MMC.
