Malt Whisky thread
Re: Malt Whisky thread
Have started the concept of the infinity bottle, did it for a wee whisky stramash at a friends last month... some interesting and evolving flavours! Anyone else having a go?

Re: Malt Whisky thread
I'm intrigued.
I guess you're putting a dram of some of your favourite whiskies into 1 bottle to create a personal blended (or pure) malt.
Once you get to a certain level, do you drink some, then top it up with something else? Effectively making your own Solera Vat.
Interesting concept (if I've got this right)

Basically yes, single malts only and never let it empty. I wrote the date I started it on in a sharpie the idea is to keep it going till it’s a treasured family heirloom. Some people keep a log of what went in it and when and how much, I just pour the remains of any decent malts I’ve had.

Re: Malt Whisky thread
Brilliant idea
That's my spreadsheet set up (I need to get out more often).
Just been perusing my stock and I think I'll add an additional rule: only whiskies over 18yo are allowed in.
I've got half a dozen or so already open to get me started.

I’m enjoying trying to balance the flavours, I like it cause you can tailor it to your own specific taste... “ooohh needs a bit of sherry cask in there...” bingo plop the neck of a nice sherry cask aged speyside in there, wee bit of peat, drop a wee islay in there. Must admit it’s a sare yin pouring the last of a really good malt in... bit of a gamble but it seems to pay off with interesting results

Ps you’ll need to log what you take out it if you really want to reproduce it. As we were discussing we identified that If you logged it properly i.e. what went in and quantity and what you took out and quantity you could recreate the flavour at any point of the journey should you decide you particularly liked a sample at any point.

Sounds like a nice idea, but recreating it could get expensive!rawsco wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2017 11:14 pmPs you’ll need to log what you take out it if you really want to reproduce it. As I'm at the other end of the malt whisky market to this thread, but I thought I'd add that Amazon and the supermarkets have their usual array of decent deals on the go at the moment.
Some examples on Amazon:
I found The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve (at 20 quid a bottle) a nice easy whisky to drink, fruity sweet.
Auchentoshan American Oak (at 19 quid a bottle) - again quite sweet, a touch of cinnamon in there, I prefer the Glenlivet, but it wasn't bad.
Laphroaig Select - the non age statement Laphroaig is £23. I haven't tried it because the 10 is amazing, and my favoured malt, and it doesn't cost much more but it seems to be rated by some as a lighter version of the 10, which perhaps means I should pick up a bottle.
Other than that, I'm enjoying Bowmore 9 year Sherry Cask I picked up last year and never opened as my Christmas malt this year. Appealing to my sweet tooth again I guess.
If you're looking for something that approximates whisky, is sweet and you can throw some lemonade in for a longer drink (which I do as I don't drink beer, and hitting malts straight away doesn't always go so well!) Jim Beam Honey for 12 quid a bottle is nice - I appreciate this isn't the tread for that sort of thing, but
