Landrovers are easy to work on,... even I managed it!

Seeing they claim a 12Bhp gain on a 300Tdi without any fuel pump changes from a bolt on exhaust I think i would place them firmly in the sh*t basket

I would take their suggested BHP increases with a pinch of salt.
However any TD5, chipped, sports exhaust

(cats and silencers removed), with a higher flow air filter, will see considerable performance improvements.
Having had Defenders for a while now however, I would hate to think about how often things have to be replaced when all the performance stuff is done. (Especially as these "TP" Defenders are effectively only used on the road).

Word has it that over-tuned Td5's are prone to exhaust manifold warping due to over-heating; apparently curable by fitting a ceramic manfold (££). Otherwise the engine is pretty bomb-proof and takes to tuning well. I know personally of a couple of lightly chipped Td5's that have had no problems, and the enthusiasts mags are full of happy tuned owners. Alive tuning and Twisted are indeed the best known and probably most experienced of the chippers and tuners.
Aside from the manifold issue, it's the running gear that will most likely fail early due to the extra torque and power, especially if you use the low ratio box in anger. Uprated shafts etc are all available - the aftermarket is mechano-heaven - but all at a cost.
That said, I've kept mine bog-standard. Like a Rolls Royce - the performance is 'adequate, sir...'

Lots of modifications available for all of the power units and the likes of Ashcroft will give you a new drive train. A bit of extra power is certainly no bad thing but I’ve yet to see a modification which will make them go around corners. Oh and the brakes might need a little something if you are going to drive it fast.

The only think I'd like to see done to a Defender is a slightly more wifey friendly interior. I think they're the poodle's plums.

My new(ish) one is not too bad, for a Defender, Greg.
11k miles (mostly off road) and it only took 3 physiotherapy appointments to bring my right arm back into use.
