Thinking about a nice big comfortable Audi A6 estate to replace my freelander2. Not looking to spend any more money on a new car so looking around £10-11k... There are a lot of high mile cars.

Is this a good move? How many miles am I likely to get out of one of these?
Any other similar cars I should be thinking of?

Weve been looking at a 320d coupe around about the same price bracket. Not quite as high miles but also wondering about longevity. Are these modern diesel engines as reliable as the old fashioned ones?

Shirley if a fully dealer-stamped book and decent warranty are evident it should be relatively risk-free?

Usual health warnings around fully stamped book should negate timing belt/serpentine belt/water pump replacement and £11k should give you a choice of many lower mileage cars

I would be concerned if you are going to be towing your beloved nags.................

I would venture that the Audi will pull 1500kg
One decent size Nag is 500kg
Even one nag and a trailer is much higher (You have two?)

For example: Your Ifor willams 505 (one of the most common) it's MGW is 2340kgs
TBH your current Freelander is not a legal proposition either

My old Grand Cherokee is not everyone's vehicle of choice but it legally tows 2800kg

I attended an event at Gleneagles recently and Tayside's finest were checking suspect vehicles and escorting them to a weighbridge

A Subaru Forester towing a 510 and 1000kg of warmbloods was an easy pull (Arf...Arf)

£11k should get you an 07/57 thingy with 100k miles

Ryannnnnnnnn and the dodgy one have a land cruisers with well over 100k on it and its been bomb proof.
Seem to remember that it can tow small countries too.

For low hassle, low budget think Japanese. audits are great but you're paying badge premium. land cruisers, Lexus, legacies can all be had sub 10k and all but the land cruisers with fewer than 100k.

Old e39 5 series bummers are pretty bomb proof too, and significantly cheaper than 10k

I bought an 04 plate 1.9 TDI PD A4 estate 3 years ago with 108k on the clock, it has 170k on the clock now.
I use it pretty much every day for a 50 mile round trip mostly motorway commute and plenty of longer trips down south including towing the Locost.

In that time it has never broken down and has used only fuel, oil, front brake pads & disks, tyres, light bulbs and one wheel bearing. It still returns real world 50+mpg. Serviced every 20k, MOTs have all been fine. I'd have no problem at all buying another 100k Audi, the only thing that really shows the miles are the shock absorbers, it's very boingy but they don't leak and they're not bad enough to fail an MOT yet.

Another "Yes buy one" vote for me.
Bought a 2003 one owner avant in 2006 with 90k, now at 170k.
Belts have been done once in my ownership, never missed a beat.
Couple of issues with central locking but other than that no problems.
For that money if you are prepared to travel you should be able to get a good 57/08 S Line

I bought my w211 E500 with +90K on it... it's now at 103K and as long as I ignore the computer telling me that hitting the reserve tank constitutes a 'malfunction', it's been fine so far.
It'll probably blow up on me tomorrow now I've said that.

I'd be interested to know where the 100k was clocked up i.e. town/motorway as the condition of the car and any potential failure is not always dependant on mileage. A friend at work bought a 2004 Renault Scenic just before xmas for £2400. It had 29k miles on the clock with FRSH. So far he has had to replace the electronic keycard (£200), the electric handbrake (£800) and just last week the gearbox failed to select 5th so he now needs a replacement and the garage have recommended he changes the clutch at the same time so probably a bill coming in for a Grand These prices are not even using a Renault garage.

Guy here at work bought a 100k+ Audi tank AWD with an Autobox which has just recently exploded... £2000 for a rebuild.

Yeah the 1.9 TDi PD is quite a reliable engine.

Avoid VAG 2.0 TDi's at all costs. Notoriously unreliable, injectors and oils pumps are main problems.
