Pesky Wabbits (NLC)

Post by 111Robin » Fri May 04, 2012 8:44 pm

Not sure why but this past year my garden has become the playground for a load of rabbits (ok they might be hares, who cares). They've chewed holes through a plastic mesh fence, dug holes under my shed and started to dig holes around the bottom of the house walls. Firstly, should I be concerned ?, are they likely to burrow below the house and set up home or is this unlikely ?. Secondly, apart from shooting them (which I can't do as I live in close proximity to three other houses) what can I do to get rid ?. Used to have the dog here, maybe she kept them away, but can't get a dog/cat so any other suggestions are welcoime. Anyhting else likely to dfeter them from excavating under my house ?

They can be trouble and very difficult to get rid of.

There was a TV show when I was young about a hunter who was always being outwitted by rabbits, and he tried everything. Even when he did shoot the damn thing it just made the rabbits face go all black, but didn't seem to particularly discourage him. So shotguns don't work nor does disguising a piece of dynamite as a carrot (of which they are very fond) by painting it orange. This is an especially bad idea as you mentioned they were close to your house.

Now as I think about it it was always the same rabbit that outwitted him, and it could talk, so possibly other rabbits would be easier. Be warned though they are particularly fond of sticking carrots in the barrels of firearms causing them to backfire. (Although I suggest you are probably getting too close if this becomes a serious issue for you). In fact I suspect that if they are allowing you to get so close they can reach your gun then you could probably just start clubbing them. Don't let the rabbit take your gun though, which is something that seemed to happen with alarming regularity in the TV show.

Brilliant pete.
An good air rifle will be enough for rabbits and won't bother the neighbours and a 22 caliber rifle is not very noisy either. Is it more the neighbours like the rabbits and don't want you murdering them?

I think he's more concerned about accidentally maiming one of his neighbours ...

As to being worried, I would say yes, you should worry. Rabbits breed like, well, rabbits and you don't want them inhabiting your garden, house, sheds, etc. As an animal lover and vegetarian of many years I feel the right course of action is to shoot the barsteward :-)

That rodenator thing looks ace but based on my experience of rabbits it won't work. All that will happen is you will detonate the device and turn round to see Mr Rabbit stood next to you using the flame of the detonation to light a cigar which has materialised in his paw.

A much better idea has occurred to me though. I was at a children's party a little while ago where they had a magician. Now he performed for over an hour and most of his tricks were frankly unconvincing but his finale was awesome. He had a rabbit which he made disappear!
I was watching quite closely, I mean I'd had a drink or two but I was watching and he just popped it into a top hat and when he turned the hat over it had gone!

Could you not just get him to perform his magic in your garden? I mean it can't have been more than 50 quid for the performance and you could just explain to him that you don't want him to saw anyone in half or perform any nonsense with cards. You just want him to do the rabbit trick over and over again.

No mess, no explosions, no risk to your home and no Noops running round with munitions. Just one minute there's a rabbit - the next minute - no rabbit!!!

Or get one of those white rabbits you get for kids and put some lipstick on it and a sexy dress and use her as a lure. You could keep it on a long lead, like those retracting ones you get for dogs, and then the wild rabbits could be enticed into some sort of cunning trap of your own devising - I'm sure someone could lend you a van or a horsebox.

If you don't want to buy a rabbit you could perhaps fabricate a convincing model using a picture of Jessica Rabbit from the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" as a starting point. (She's the sexiest rabbit I can think of but you might know of others).

HTH,

pete

Pete, I'm sure you can get medication for this bunny fetish. In case you cannot, I'm sure you can find the Cadbury's Caramel Advert on specialist sites ;-)
