Miniblonde and I have been tasked to find a Bernese Mountain Dog for Miniblondes mother. Please, has anyone any recommendations or know of any breeders that are very good? Thanks

Cannot help on the mountain dog.

Bert looks great. Jealous. Though just as well L likes the dog walking as I'll bet he has plenty of energy!

Meet Bracco our 5 month old Doberman.
Great nature, real sap with bags of energy.

He's a real barker though but I guess they're bred as guard dogs.
Used to be through the night but we're now getting to bang on 6am before he starts. It's for nothing more than attention.
A little longer lie in at weekends would be nice.

The only problem is.....when out on walks he's great with people and dogs but has to say "hello" to people.....as in jumps up on them wagging his tail.
With the Doberman rep....and the fact one day he'll be 40odd kg....how the hell do you stop the jumping????

I think you have to just persist with the training. I have a long horse lead if you want to borrow it. if you want me to come out and "be the stranger" then im happy to do that.

It was my fault for training him to stand on his back legs and put his paws on my shoulders when I tapped them and said "up" ... but now if he meets anyone who isn't really comfortable with big dogs and pulls their arms up and says anything resembling "up" or "argh" or "Ohhhhh god noooo" then they get the full 85kg of Great Dane eyeballing them whether they like it or not

Hi Gareth,

The trick is to ignore the dog totally when it's jumping up - if necessary push it back (don't hurt it, obvz) by puffing your chest out and walking directly against the dog. The dog will quickly respond to this knowing that you don't want it to jump up. Then, as soon as (and it's important to be on the ball here, I think) it sits down or stands on all fours and looks up at you, reward the dog by getting down to its level - so that your face to face, let the dog lick your hands, nuzzle your face, etc. Do this a couple of times and the dog will learn not to jump up at you. Be sure to say down at the same time as pushing it back.

Now if the dog continues to jump up at others, you obviously cannot expect them to march into your dog, so you need to distract the dog - e.g. something that makes a noise or poke it with your finger or whatever - again, the moment the dog gets down, you have to reward it (bag of chicken bits in pocket is good).

Pushing firmly down on the top of the head has the desired effect (no hitting), my springer Harvey is now 10 and I've never had an issue, he loves people, but will just nuzzle into their legs for attention.

I'm probably the only one in the family he doesn't jump up on.
He is getting better and it is him only being a puppy.

The problem is, as he's so friendly people tend to pat him when he jumps up.
We've been taking him to puppy gun dog classes which we've found to be great and different (better) than the normal puppy mixing classes.

If one thing I've learnt, the Dobbie is a stubborn breed! We'll get there.
