After Ian's thread about online buying I just thought I would start a thread about wine.

I no wine buff and tend to just buy from the supermarket and normally if it’s on special offer

I went to the Three chimneys for dinner a few weeks ago and we had a really nice bottle of wine. Cost £40, I bought a case of 12 for £150 from Corney and Barrow. Eradus, 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, Awatare Valley, Marlborough, New Zeland.

Ive been thinking about joining a wine club, any recomendations?

Just thought it would be a good idea for people to share their experiences and any deals going about.

Like yourself I'm not exactly a wine buff. I get a case of wine from Laithwaites every couple of months which tends to be pretty good quality. It's also not the sort of stuff you'd pick up in the supermarket, plus saves having to actually go to the supermarket. I've also used Virgin Wines in the past but I'm sure they just get the wine from Laithwaites anyway. Have heard good things about Naked Wines too but have yet to try them.

Another Laithwaites customer here. We've found that once you take the initial incredible deal, you'll get a few cases that are okay for strong money (can reject if you want), but then they regard you as a 'loyal customer' and you get calls with some much better deals. We're on our first "upgrade" case and got some excellent Prosecco for not a lot of coin added in. I work in sales, I know it's all bull, but it's acceptable to me.

Friendly company - humans with some knowledge on the phone and no real hard sell. Sure, they send you stuff regularly, but if you don't want it, don't take it.

Just don't have the time to get properly in-depth about tasting and choosing great wines from retailers and I've never had a bad bottle from Laithwaites. For an amount that we're happy to spend to have decent wine on hand, it just works.

Any of the Aberdeen lot tried the new wine shop on the corner of St. Swithin & Stanley Street?
Looks a bit more up market than your typical supermarket stuff. Wondering if it's worth a bash. Like others I'm partial to the odd bottle but not sure my tastes are sophisticated enogh to tell a good wine from a bad one.

I've not tried that one yet. I tend to go to the one on Fountainhall Road - staff seem pretty knowledgeable about the wine, plus they have cases of beer in their fridges.

From racing to wine clubs in 2 years ............

Hendersons Wine in Edinburgh is very good. David Henderson also hosts tasting dinners throughout the course of the year. Definately worth supporting the local wine merchant in this case. Great advice & knowledge and normally some very interesting Marlboroughs Greywacke etc

Or keep an eye out in sainsburys for decent deals, if its 50% off, give it a go then buy a case or six .

I'm quite old fashioned in my tastes now, started with French, moved to big bold New Worlds and now back to French. In red, mainly Rhones or Bordeaux and Chablis for white. A wee sauvy-bee from Kiwiland is a lovely refreshingtipple too

Enjoyed a Domaine Nicolet Rasteau last night although paying mainland Europe prices right now
Already dreaming of coming back down with the trailer. Think I brought back about 200btls for S and I and friends who put in orders last time.

Côtes de Rhône and Ron Burgandy man myself when budget permits.

Dont really drink red myself, it seems to give me a Shug-like hangover, but picked up a couple of Marlboroughs after reading this earlier - quite like the fact that you never really have a bad one, just varying degrees of success. If the weather holds, I'll be in the garden sampling them by 6.

nope, we are moving in to one of our flats short term till we buy something. Bidding currently, but not sealed it yet.

Bet as soon as I dont have a garden, we have the best summer in years...........last time we had an awesome summer (2006?) my 111R was off the road for 2 months!

Con Sur - red wine with an almost chocolatey taste to it ( tastes better than it sounds) but haven't seen it for a couple of years now
Also had a bottle of Mustang Valley that was top - no idea if we bought it, and if we did where from, or it was given to us but have never seen it again to get another bottle

Not new, just moved - opened on Urquhart Road more than 25 years ago,moved to Springfield Road and now in new home. Still owned by the same guy (Tariq), knows his stuff. I learned a lot from him and Mike who used to work for him,not sure who else is working there now.

Haven't been in to the new shop, but good variety of wines before,not all expensive.

If you want to learn about wine go in and ask for advice.

If you do get a chance to go to South Africa, some of the wineries are awesome. You can hire an AC Cobra and do it also, Cape Cobra (thank Ali C for that one!)

We spent a few days touring and stayed at some wonderful places, went to one of the worlds top 50 restaurants - just a magic trip.

Would love so do something similar in NZ, but dont see that happening with the wee one in tow for now.
