Secure Online Sharing...

After a wee bit of advice.

Looking to share some family photos and possibly videos but want to keep them secure with a password so only authorised people can view them - any tips?

We have our own website for stuff we're not so precious about - but pics and videos of the wee one we would rather restrict access to.

Not too fussed if we have to pay a small subscription for a good service - just want it to be easy to use and quick to upload/view - don't have as much time to be creative these days :-)

Ta in advance

Alistair

On Facebook you can make your pictures only available to people that you want to see them.
Don't know how secure it is or whether they can be shared on to others but I often post pictures that are only viewable by the people in them.

Snapfish is worth a look.
Our friend posts pics of our godchildren there and have sent us a password to view them.

Dropbox, far better than anything suggested so far and has a great iPhone app (and presumably android too).
And if you send me your email address I'll send you an invite through my account and get some extra free space when you sign up :)

I like SmugMug for sharing pictures.

You can set galleries to be private or public too.

Fbook works but needs end users to be on it. I use Vimeo for videos for grandparents. Easy pwd protection and unique short urls.

Dropbox seconded. It's one of those products that you look back on after 3 months and think, "what on earth did I do before this existed?"

Yup, dropbox was my immediate thought too, and I can confirm the Android app is good too.

As Simon suggested, let him invite you as I reckon you both then get extra space.

If you want, you can set it up to sync automatically with a photos folder on your computer. Basically, the dropbox appears like a drive on your computer, and you just copy a folder into it to keep them in sync I reckon.

Under no circumstances at all should you ever consider anything you put on facebook, no matter what privacy settings you do/don't click, secure or private. Quite the opposite - everything you ever type, do, say, every group you join, every coffee you drink, every time you fix your location with your iPhone, etc., etc., etc., will be on facebook to be shared either now or, 'accidentally', in the future.

Actually I don't think any of the other places are *that* secure either, though Dropbox is a transparent site with no pretences of being social media platform, so would be my choice.

Be warned - pretty much nothing on the internet is truly secure.

Cheers,
Robin

not too clued up on this yet but have been looking into networked hard drives like this

It would be a bit pricey if you're just looking for occasional sharing but could do the job?

I used to have one of them, the cloud stuff was really slow. You might have to pay for it after a free period , I can't remember

Thirded. It's excellent and totally cross platform.

PIcasa for photos.

Dropbox for videos.

I imagine Picasa will be extended to cope better with videos in due course, but for now Google thinks YouTube fits the bill. Not so sure about that...will be checking it out though.

Demos and tutorials available on request, bro ;-)
