Joining a gym

I have decided to get active and join a gym . There is a good one just up the road from me which charges £50 a month for off peak plus a £200 joining fee which is half price this month . It would be a twelve month contract .

It has full gym , swimming pool , sauna steam room , snooker tables etc

What do you guys think , good deal or not so good ? Should I try and haggle to get them to wave the fee ?

the fee is always negotiable... and they have targets to hit... so just tell them you aint joining until they wave the fee and to call you when they will.... rest assured when they have a target to hit at month end... they'll call you!

been a member of a few gyms in my time (not that it shows!) and never paid a joining fee yet!

Dave.

 thats quite pricey i reckon....

my gym costs £25 anytime use, no joining fee, and that includes squash.

Its not the best but its cheap.

i think the likes of next gen and holmes place charge in the region of 40-50 per month peak and off peak but are always desperate for members and often offer months for free no sign on fee etc.

If they're willing to drop the joining fee to hit targets, don't join.
If all they're interested in is cramming people in then it's going to be busier and the staff will have less time to give you any attention.
Next Generation and Bannatynes ones are like that, Bannatynes less so IME and I've heard that the new JJB one in Dundee has crazy targets.

I go to Liz McColgan's one in Carnoustie, it's a small gym but has what I need and the staff are all friendly and always available. That's what I'd be looking for.

Do they do extras?

The g/f's gym csts £40 for both of us and no joining fee, free swimming pool and at any time. It's hard enough to get me to go at all but if it's expensive as well you can forget it! It is in Preston though....

Its 5 minutes walk from my house so I would not have any petrol costs and if I went to one a few miles away I would be less likely to use .

I will go and take a look .

That's way to steep IMO.

Where in Glasgow are you? I joined Glasgow Uni gym as a graduate member and it's only £27.50 per month, full access and all the facilities you could need (Note to self: go to gym more!). It also has the added benefit of fit Freshers in a few weeks time! :) I think they let you join (but a bit more expensive) even if you're not a graduate of the uni. Also, Caledonian uni let non-uni people join and it's a really good gym, although doesn't have a swimming pool.

Also used to be a member of Bellahouston gym. It was under £30 per month and got me full access to any Glasgow City Council gym: Bellahouston, Kelvinhall, Scotstoun, etc. Pretty good value, but I didn't like the swimming pool as it was still a public swimming pool and full of wee neds.
