My nephew is getting a Mac desktop for his x-mas and wants me to get him speakers.

Normally I would spend a couple of hundred quid on his x-mas what are the best options?

AMP3 have a few others.

its for his bedroom 5m x 5m.

Cheers

I would suggest, as it is a good sized room to go for an amp and a set of bookshelf speakers, for the budget there are loads of options.

Richer sounds would be able to do something say..............

Ok its not cutting edge or perhaps as neat but would at least provide sound worth listening to while not necessarily sitting in front of the Mac.

I have a nice wee USB DAC/ T-amp on my desk (bought for the headphone facility but has speaker connections) with a set of older Mission bookshelfs, for me it provides an ideal solution and would be more than adequate, might not get for Christmas though. It is properly musical, nice and clear with a limited volume, which isn't a bad thing.

Like this........

Just my 2p.

Don't appear to be on the site, but we do have stocks as we sold them at Gadget Show Christmas earlier in the month - fire Andy a mail is probably your best bet.

Depends on how he intends to use them, but FWIW - I have a set of these sitting in front of me now. Incredible for the size of them, plus no need for separate power supply. Plenty volume for that size of room too. If it's a more dedicated audiophiley setup, then Max's suggestion of a separate DAC & bookshelf speakers would be good. Check the FiiO products on our site as they consistently get reviewed really well, but don't stretch into the 'money no object' end.

I think I recall a pair of these hosting the part outside at Andys one AMP3 day. Was mighty impressed with them and have put of buying a set as in my head I should really dig out an old amp and use old speakers I have but in all honesty they would probably be better.

Question: Do Macs have an optical /spdif out for speakers / amps and for this intended use (perhaps even gaming) might it be handy to have something that supports it ?

Lush kit, but won't be available until after Christmas I'm afraid.
