So..

Not that someone at work is trying to persuade me to buy his 996 C4 or anything... but for arguments sake, what would we value this at, trade/retail?!?!

2002 on a 52 plate 996 Carrera 4. Black.
New engine fitted by Porsche Glasgow in Sept 2010 which now has 25k miles on it. Car has 56k in total. Original engine went boooom due to "water ingress" after hitting a flood (really RMS).
Switchable sports exhaust.
Full BOSE.
Seat backs and console colour coded.
Extended leather. Everything in it is leather, roof and all.
£18k of extras and £76k new.

Make sure and take it for a good drive, I took a 53 plate one for a drive last year that was in the Glasgow Porsche centre, it was a horrible thing, even the salesman agreed with me. It just didn't feel right at all.

Would recommend you take it to a Porsche specialist to get it checked out as well. Can recommend Motortune in Shotts or David Millar in Edinburgh. Both have worked on our 964 and would definitely recommend them.

There are also some Porsche recognised Porsche inspection companies (Peter Morgan and previously Phillip Raby) however I don't think Peter Morgan comes up this far and Phillip Raby may have concentrated on car sales rather than inspections.

Also would recommend that you pop along to 911uk.com as they would be able to give you a good valuation on the expected price if you like the car. Only ever driven one 996 and it was tiptronic so was an ultimate turn off.

Quick search on Pistonhead (mostly C4S) and they range from £15.5k to £20k). Suspect that a normal C4 would be worth up to 1.5K less but that's purely a guess.

With the new engine stigma, and a quick look at my friend Mr Glass, and as it's not a 4S or wide-bodied, it's worth about £15k in a private sale, trade a bit less, dealer retail a bit more

I quite liked the look of this 2004 Porsche 911 Collectors Anniversary Edition @ £26,888 (well apart from the Blingy alloys) although not sure if that represents good value or not

There's private sellers valuation...then Glass's....then there's Boagsters which is usually between £5k below value and sweet FA!

A Carrera 2 or 2S is more loved
Carrera 4 tends to be a bit more of an acquired taste as far as the handling stakes go.
(An understeerer unless booted into a corner)
I would value it £1500 behind our European Sales Manager at Lotus at £13500 for a private sale
New engine or not it's still valued at the ODO milege - Graeme is obviously in a good mood with a large Balvenie in his hand
The good news is that a replacement engine is around £10k at dealer prices
(One of the longest running threads on Pistonheads is about 911 engine failure)

I'm guessing if that's all it's worth... he'd be daft to sell it. It's only a month or two from being paid off and it's a nice one. I'd happily have it off him for under £15k... especially since it had about £12k of engine put in it only a few years ago! Still looks brand new too.

This all came about when he mentioned an XKR and I told him to go for it and sell me the Porker. A joke rapidly became a real possibility... but the XKR he wants is £28k, so that's a bit too much to make the change sensible it would seem.

I'll just go back to looking at £20k Cayman S's and Z4M coupes. If a decent one comes up locally.... I'm feeling impulsive right now.
