Outdoor car covers fook the paintwork??

Right, while I'm (almost certainly) gonna be down in Guildford for the next 3 months the car may be sitting up here on the driveway, open to the elements all that time. I says to me dad I might get a car cover for it (I heard Lidl were doing some a while back for a tenner and Steve Banks would probably only want me left nut for his official Lotus one :D)......
But my dad, coming from the generation where car's cost the same as houses, seems to be very familiar with outdoor car covers - and says they wear the paint off the car! Sitting all that time with the wind blowing the canvas cover over the paintwork I can see his point! He says he even knew a guy who used to but a blanket over the bonnet each night to keep the frost out and even that wore the paint off!

Fook, if that's the case why do Lotus sell these things? Should I try and find a garage to keep the car in? If I'm not going to be using the car all that time I'd at least like it to be not corroding at it's usual rapid rate!

cheers

I have one, the places where it touches the car are held tight so it would have to be very strong winds to wear it away. Remember that generaton are used to crappyer paint too. Just make sure the car is spotlessly clean first.

Crappier paint than Lotus - only on Fiats and Alfasuds :(

Agreed, paint quality is worse nowadays than it used to be.

be careful mate. I have some nasty laquer scratches over the rear wheelarches from the cover I used last winter. That was after cleaning the car before covering... and it was a 'tailored' cover.

There is you problem, the clams are just there to act as ablative shields to the chassis and keep the rocks off you!
