Outdoor car covers fook the paintwork??

Right, while I'm (almost certainly) gonna be down in Guildford for the next 3 months the car may be sitting up here on the driveway, open to the elements all that time. I says to me dad I might get a car cover for it (I heard Lidl were doing some a while back for a tenner and Steve Banks would probably only want me left nut for his official Lotus one
)......
But my dad, coming from the generation where car's cost the same as houses, seems to be very familiar with outdoor car covers - and says they wear the paint off the car! Sitting all that time with the wind blowing the canvas cover over the paintwork I can see his point! He says he even knew a guy who used to but a blanket over the bonnet each night to keep the frost out and even that wore the paint off!
Fook, if that's the case why do Lotus sell these things? Should I try and find a garage to keep the car in? If I'm not going to be using the car all that time I'd at least like it to be not corroding at it's usual rapid rate!
cheers
