Kindle / Touch / Paperwhite

Mrs Bee has been dropping mega hints for a Kindle for her birthday in just under a fortnight...
Now I thought you only got a kindle wifi and 3g, and then the fire which is their tablet, not what she's after.
A quick look-see on Amazon has enlightened me...
Any pointers as to what's good etc?
Initial thoughts are the paperwhite with built in light, for reading in bed, worth the extra £40?
TIA

Cannot say whether or not the back light is useful or not, but the kindle reader concept is sound. Katie and I each have them and haven't looked back. We don't have the fancy tablets, just the simple non-back-lit readers (first and second gen).
Personally I wouldn't want the tablet variant - I tried one in John Lewis and couldn't quite get to grips with it ... a bit like Windows 8 ... lots of pictures but no idea how to get a command line open
I find mine awkward to read without reasonable lighting, so the back light is perhaps a good idea -- but then the battery life might be sh*t.
Cheers,
Robin

Just bought Verian the Paperwhite a couple of days ago Ross. She already had the Kindle Keyboard for two years and has read hundreds of books, and even though she said she could not justify a new one, I bought it for her anyway.
She could not read in bed before, and as she often has two hour periods in the early hours when she would go and read in the kitchen, now she can read in bed, and with slightly increasing the font size, she does not need to wear her glasses. It is also smaller and lighter and the white screen as opposed to grey is much better, plus the background lighting is the best of any of the readers out there.
No brainer, buy her the Paperwhite WiFi at £109 and not the basic one. I went and bought the 3G Keyboard version which was a waste of money as she has never used it, she always has all the books that she wants loaded on.
I have just put the original one on eBay, and as it had a cover fitted from the start it is in brand new condition.

ps:- she is just working her way through the three book series of "50 Shades of Grey", so I have had to go into training to keep my end up and not let the side down.

Battery life is fine Robin, lasts at least as long as the old one, probably more. The improvement in screen and CPU technology means that there is no more drain even with the lighting on.
ps:- maybe we should start an e-Book swap club, as I presume that just like paperbacks or DVD's, it is legal to lend them out to friends.

Thanks tut - first hand experience was exactly what I was looking for, and must admit to being wary of battery life, and you've dispelled that concern too, cheers!
Paperwhite getting ordered shortly, thanks!

Katharine had a keyboard Kindle for a couple of years, I got the later one, both great for reading, especially on holidays. We got covers with lights for reading in low light. Earlier this year I bought a paperwhite for Katharine and she loves it. Battery life is good.

If it's for reading books, you should consider a Barnes and Noble Nook, they are going rather cheap at the moment and the eInk screen refreshes quicker than my friends much more expensive Kindle touch and seemed clearer to my eye.
I have a Nook Simple touch, bargain at 29 quid, looks to be still available at that price on the Argos site...

2GB onboard is plenty, and they have a micro SD slot if you must carry an entire library around with you.
Then use the rest of the cash for a slap up meal or something for more brownie points

Good idea to buy a case Ross. I bought this one for £4.

Something to be aware of is that the touch/paperwhite versions don't have physical buttons to turn the page, so they're no good inside a freezer bag for reading in the bath.
I do most of my reading in the bath so I'm very happy with my non-touch Kindle!

That would be one application for eye tracking that would be warranted in my opinion - though battery life would be problematic! I find I have to swap hands with the kindle quite frequently to avoid getting cramp. If the unit were a little thicker and no buttons on the side then you could hold it more comfortably (at present you cannot grip the reader like that, because you end up pressing the forwards/backwards buttons).
It's not a big deal, though!
Cheers,
Robin
